Overheating. What's this part called?

    Hi there.

Probably a very basic question, but what is the name of this pipe? I need to get a new one as it's got splits throughout it.

My overheating light in coming, at first normal when 80mph or more, now, even 30mph and the light is coming on. When I switched the ignition off, the fan was still spinning for about 5 minutes then turned off.

Im guessing the splits in that pipe would be the reason for over-heating. Oil and waters are all full. But, I might have an oil leak on the engine too. It's quite greasy around the engine, but I don't actually see any drops or anything.

The image of the engine is not from my car, but still same part with the problem

Also, if I used ducktape to "fix" the splits, until I got it to a garage, how far do you think I could drive like this?

That wont be your problem at all mate.

Could be your HG. Take the oil cap off and check for mayo. Check how much waters sitting in your radiator, also could be the thermostat.

might be an airlock in engine if its not what prickle said

try reading this then do what it says after "fitted new radiator"

That pipe helps on cold mornings, correct me if I'm wrong? So that won't be the issue.
Does your fan cut in? I had a problem with mine where the fan stopped cutting in so it started o heating. Culd also have a look at the coolant, make sure that's not ruined. But if it's been over heating, your head gasket could have blown as a result, it can also cause other issues such as head warping, so try not to drive it much (if at all) whilst it's in that state. Also check the thermostat, could be that's not opening all the way anymore

I just put in about 3L of water into the coolant tank thing, need to add the actual coolant mix too, forgot about that.... I have just topped it with water before, so maybe because there was no coolant in the water, it evaporated, which lead to the over heating? Ill try get some coolant tomorrow and see what happens from there.

I did try drive for about 5 minutes, then the overheating light came on again, so I pulled over, and undid the coolant cap, and it "splurted" out like a shaken up bottle of coke :-/

Your best off, replacing the coolant flush the engine / radiator too

just water wont evaporate under pressure, it just wont have good corrosion inhibiting properties that coolant does. I'd take your car to a garage for proper diagnosis, the overheating and cooling system over-pressurising could lead to major issues such as Head gasket, if its not already gone.

Just had a look inside the engine, and found that this pipe is not connected anymore, it seems to have "melted". I can see oil around the area too. Maybe this is also part of the problem. Gonna see if I can get it into a garage tomorrow to be checked over (: Appreciate the input though guys, cheers!

That pipe isnt your problem either.

You need to change your thermostat and then drain/refill the cooling system making sure water exits from ALL THREE bleed points. If you still have problems then clearly you have either a major leak or headgasket failure.

Is the underneath of the oil cap all creamy?

The oil cap was pretty much just oily. The cooliant cap had a creamyish substance around it, and from what I could see in the coolant bit, a bit more gunk floating on the water.

    Are you doing short journey`s?

He said the coolant cap was gooey.

Thats basically, definately headgasket failure / a slipped liner.

    I'm guessing thats a 1.0 or 1.1?
