steering rack clunkin

  1. #1
    just cleaned my vtr
its been parked up for a couple of months

upon moving it into the middle of the drive theres a clunkin when turnin that makes me wince. same sort of sound when you prise something open.

this is on the drivers side, had a look under the bonnet and it looks like the steering rack is making a bit of contact with the spring on that side. wtf is that about?

the tyre is rubbing aswell, very clear squeek of wet rubber when goin backwards and forwards.

it was fine when i drove it home last time?

has anyone had this problem before, or heard of the parts and repair inc. costs needed?

    thanks in advance!

Check the camber of the wheel that side, has it been knocked/kerbed? Causing the suspension to lean in & make contact with the rack.

you would really need to get the car on a lift and keep looking at both the drivers and passenger suspension to see what the difference.

the only time i have heard a car make the exact noise was on a mates 106 he had cut springs and one kept sliping out and rubbing the tyre and when turning the wheel it would clunk about.

might be a problem with your spring. see if its seated properly and pictures would be a great advantage to you

this is a shot lookin down under the bonnet
you can see how the end of the steering rack is makin contact with the spring

not sure if the end of the spring looks to healthy either

below are 2 photos of the spring making contact with the tyre

here is a photo looking up inside the wheel arch, as you can see, the arrangement of the spring doesnt look too clever
in the foreground something looks deteriorated, which i only noticed after uploading the pictures

hope these give a better insight

another bit of info that may be important:

in all of these photos, the steering is fully locked to the right

on full-lock, the car feels like it raises about an inch

Your coil spring is broken, your lucky it hasnt popped the tyre to be honest. Cant work out what the last picture is though (the one with the arrow and ?) but you 100% need a new spring mate

check the condition of the tyre on the side with the broken spring aswell. If there are any cuts or splits in the tyre that will need replacing aswell

thanks lads! is this gonna call for a pair of springs to be bought?

may aswell get -40mm if so?

As above either that or the top mount is broken/damaged & made the spring sit at an angle.

broken spring slipped off the mount.
