5th gear whine?

  1. #1
Sup all. Just finished fitting a newish box to the car. And bit of a problem.... All gears sound fine but 5th has this whine/sing to it and I'm buggered if I know why. I did have to rebuild 5th before I put it on but I'm certain I did this right. The difference was I put an output 5th gear pinion with a roller bearing built in instead of a non-roller bearing type. Could it be this???

Any suggestions or guesses would be brill.

what parts did you change on 5th? if the gears were out of different gearboxes, that'd probably explain it as the wear patterns/tooth contact would be slightly mis-matched

I changed the output pinion, the sync ring, the sync mechanism - the reason I did this was because I couldn't turn the gearbox by hand if I selected anything but 5th - it was jamming by the looks of things. When I put the 5th pinion with the roller bearing it turned freely.

Wonder if it would have jammed had it had the engine rotating it

Adsayer obviously your box is rebuilt mines whined in fifth for 30k or so still going strong it's just transmission noise to me. I added some wynns gearbox treatment which made it abit quieter.

I drive new cars at work that whine more than mine so stopped worrying.

This isn't a typical gearbox whine dude. This is loud(ish)!

Should hear mine in 5th at about 40 it almost makes my ear's bleed. Been fine for 6000 miles though.
