1998 VTR overheating

  1. #1
    Hi
I have just baught i 1998 VTR and am having trouble with the temperature of the engine. when driving sensibly it seems to sit at just under 3/4 which i have been told is normal, when i accelerate a lot to around 60/70 it seems to sit at 3/4 which i have also been told is normal. the problem seems to be when accelerating beyond 70mph. once past 70 it seems to rapidly increase in temperature and by 95(on a runway) i have to slow before it goes into red.
this kinda has me baffled as i dont think it is head gasket as there are no unusual smells, water doesnt seem to bubble over and it runs really smooth. the power also seems to be fine. could it be water pump?
    any ideas appretiated
    cheers

What's the condition of the rad?

Green temperature sensor might be knackered.

If so its a cheap fix

radiator knackered or failing water pump

also i have found out that going down hill cools the engine to about 2/4 and going up long hills causes it to heat up to above 3/4
hope this helps. leaning towards radiator issue

Sounds like water pump on the way out. Or you have air in the system . Have you tried bleeding the cooling system ? Also how concentrated is the antifreeze mix ? Do you fans kick in all the time ? My vtr sits at half all day long and the fan kicks in just above halfway which brings it straight back down.

Check along the bottom of the rad because mine rust there & started to seep coolant.
