loosing power, exhaust glowing + using loads of fuel.

Basically i drove 9 miles into town parked up and went to tesco came back out and started my car up and it was really juddery on idle. I couldnt get hardly any power out of the car at all. Said i used 40 miles worth of fuel and i only went 3 miles down the road. Parked up + i could smell like petrol burning so i looked under the car and my cat on the exhausst was literally glowing cherry red. Taken it into the garage and the bloke said the cat is falling apart causing air to get in and cause backpressure. But surely my cat isnt just going to suddenly fall apart? So im just asking your opinion as it doesnt really sound right to me.

Btw its a 1.6 clio (clio forums are dead + i always get better responses on saxp)

Well it will be blocked/knackered. Take it off and have a gander at it.

I would replace the cat as it sounds like its past it.

yeh cats can just colapse without warning.

undo the lambda sensor slightly so it blows through there you'll probs find it would be slightly better.

Okay and just tried driving home and everytime i had to stop it cut out. Would the cat cause it to do that aswell? Cheers so far

Id just bash the guts of the cat out to keep you going until a new one shows up
