Power steering pump problem

    Hi guys forgive me if I have posted this in the wrong section as you can see im a new member and not completely up to speed with the layout of the website.

    Last week the power steering failed on my 2001 vtr whilst on the way home. Wasnt too bothered as it suddenly worked again next morning. This week it has been going on a off every 5 miles.

    Finally today it is now stuck on, even if I turn the ignition off and lock the car its still buzzing away which runs the battery flat in about an hour. So i have been disconnecting the grey relay under the bonnet when not using the car to preserve the battery charge.

    Im pretty sure its the relay sticking open or closed but thought id ask a second opinion before proceeding.

    If it stops working then it need a new pump. As for it staying on i'd imagine you'd probably need a new one too but i'm just guessing.

    Id try the relay before you go and buy a new pump, had a couple of them fail on me too before

    It was the relay in the end, went up the scrappy and got 3 for a fiver off 3 saxos and the first one i tried cured it. So if anyone else has a similar problem, definately try the relay.

    My power steering has basically stopped all together now. Started not working then work, now nothing.. Do you think this my be same problem?

    All you can do is try... Take you like 5min to change the relay over

    Yeh i agree, pumps dont usually just spontaeniously stop working, as relays are so cheap its worth checking first as its and easy job. Perhaps hold the relay as you start the car, to feel if it clicks.

    Thinking of it now i could have done that with mine lol
