New car or repair this

  1. #1
basically this cost me £1100 ten days ago i managed to crash it so its a definate write off if i go to my insurance company and as im 17 i really don't want to do that my excess is £500 anyway.plus i will pay alot more for next year if i claim. So my question is should i repair this, been quoted 500 on labour + i get the parts and any resprays or should i just sell it to the scrappy and get a new car, life savings gone because of one rainy day and taking a corner to fast -.-

  2. #2
First of all, insurance should always be a last resort... out of the question theres only you involved and no third party damage.

If you have the knowledge and tools, you could have that up and running in a weekend with 200 quid.
  3. #3
Tbh, if nothing underneath is bent, Which it doesn't really look either.

you could repair that quite cheaply.

Bumper, Headlight, Bonnet, wing if damaged and a radiator fan.
  4. #4
what about damage to the railing? if thats damaged, insurance would have to get involved
  5. #5
That's the thing though i have no idea what im doing with it, I've been asking around my mates to see what they know etc to see if we could do it without a garage but i bent quite alot of metal inside just infront of the engine and im not sure how to get that out/ put a new one in
  6. #6
Damage to the railing was minimal literally it was bent the tiniest bit back
  7. #7
Anymore pictures of the damage, under the bonnet? Thats the decider really.
If its just the parts I listed above, you can do it for well under £100 and in a day.
  8. #8
wot needs replaceing like as you could get it cheap out a scrappy and save money by doing most ur self
  9. #9
As said get some picture's of under the bonnet so we can see what damage has been done.
  10. #10
Get the car home remove the bumper, take some pics & post them up someone on here will be able to tell you what needs doing mate.Hang fire on the insurance for the while.
  11. #11
just went out to take some pictures of damage but they didnt come out well, Ive got a slightly bent subframe too, radiator is also broken and the resvoir for it
  12. #12
I will take some better pictures tomorrow in the light with the bumper off and post them asap
  13. #13
    What speed did you crash?
  14. #14
if the chassis is damaged its probably easyest to get another car
  15. #15
    Radiators are 10 a penny.

When you say subframe, what do you mean exactly? Theres a metal piece that sits between the headlights and goes infront of the Radiator, that usually gets bent.
Cheap and easy to replace though.

If its the metal at the bottom, or lower down where the radiator sits..depending how severe it is, you can pull it out with minimal effort. Or cut and replace it.

    around 25-30mph

It's down where the radiator sits and its not badly bent but it is definatley out of shape as i said pictures will be up tomorrow with full view of it till then i will hold fire on the insurance/fixing of the car

    2 new headlights mk2
    bonnet
    bumper
    radiator with fan and resevoir
  19. #19
how did you actually manage to end up all that way over there? as said get some pics, you can source all your bits as long as nothing major is bent for next to nothing these days, might take a while like
  20. #20
Look in the for sale section. you might need a front pannel too looking at the bonnet how far it gone back

    manic
  21. #21
    2 new headlights mk2 - £30 - 40
bonnet - depending on condition around 50 for a good one.
    bumper - 15 - 25
radiator with fan and res 15-25

All prices from scrapyards vary mate just shop around or buy premium on here you will get the parts a lot cheaper in the for sale section.

i went round a roundabout to fast the other day and skidded a bit, i managed to stop it but was scary experience, you can never judge these things until they happen, as in i don't know how fast to go round a corner in the rain until you've done it, but tbh mate all the parts are cheap and outrageously easy to fix, have a go yourself and save 400 quid

ive had my licence for six months, but tbh insurance is a no go mate, my car isnt worth half of what you payed, and if i crashed it (touch wood) i would do it myself or sell it. i have literally reformed my car through guides and help from this forum, so give it a go as i guarentee you it will feel much better knowing you've payed half of what a garage would, when my clutch and driveshaft went i cost me like 400 quid, whereas now i would do it myself, takes time and confidence

    Where abouts are you.
I im repairing a saxo i just brought. All most done chassi leg was to bent to repair so having to weld a new one in but its all most done. By the looks of it yours would be half a days work dont get the insurance involved.
    All it needed was...
    slam panel
    wings
    bonnet
    bumper
    lights
    wish bones
    wheel
    1 strut
    1 drive shaft
and a good pull on the jig ans some welding, and then the rest of it is just nuts and bolts.
Just spent a long time looking around and now i dont have to do any spraying.
When i first brought the car

Stripped so i could see what i was doing (no oil leak, i just pulled the drive shaft out the box being an idiot)

    Re built suspension

    Getting the chassi leg

Will be for sell very soon. 2 owners from new 68k vtr other than the repair (flawless) rest of it is in mint condition.

Its what happens in here buddy.. in general chat you just get the mods and admin + members since the dark ages just giving shit and taking the piss outta everyone else

Don't worry about it, its an accident, end of

Like everyones said, you should be back sorted soon and cheap enough.. don't let garages con you into "oooooow, thats gunna be an expensive grands worth of damage".... thats one good thing about driving a saxo, parts are cheap enough.

Im breaking a black saxo, mk1 though, so if you need any transferable parts give me a shout
  34. #34
    You live and learn mate.

You know what you did wrong, you know not to do it again. It's no bother.

Plus side to it all is that you crashed a car that's cheap to replace panels on, as been said, it's easy enough by yourself.
  35. #35
Looks the same as mine did when i got it
Was pulled back into shape replace bonnet slam panel grill and headlights and fan, needs chassis end plates though and lower crossmember
This was it the day i got it done, its not a good job though bonnet looks like its open and bumper hangs down
  36. #36
Smashed mine a few months ago. Much worse. Got all parts on eBay (60 quid) and then 500 for labour and spray bonnet and bumper. Same reason. Rainy, cold December night and took corner tad too fast. :/

I dont know if you know this ,but we drive on the left over here.
