Fitting baker bm ecu engine mount - drill?

  1. #1
    Hi
I plan on fitting my baker bm group N engine mounts
The gearbox side ones sound easy - support gearbox, undo, replace, tighten!
    Easy!
It's the ecu side one that is a bit odd
I've read/heard that you need to drill the mounting hole out
    It's apparently a 10mm and the group N mount is a 12mm bolt
    Can anyone confirm?
I've read the guide, but that doesn't mention it???
But why are people saying it needs drilling?
    MK2 VTR by the way!
Thanks in advance for any help!

Yeah you will have to open the hole up to a 12mm. Its because the standard 10mm bolts are known for being weak and snapping, so bakerbm have used a much stronger 12mm one, just means you have to open the hole up so it can fit through, pretty easy once its all off anyway.

Well I got to this point

With a jack and some wood under the sump
The two bolts either side of the mount are out
The three nuts on the silver 'arm' are off
But I can't get the mount to move off :/
    Am I missing something?
    HELP!

Jack the engine up slightly more and wiggle the mount! If its still stuck, gently tap the part with three stud through it with a hammer! Usually they just stick the the mount underneath!

So everything that needs to be undone, was undone? Just a case of wiggle and shake?

So close....lol. Sometimes they can be a bit stubborn due to the engine being at a slight angle cos you've jacked it up, as said maybe lift the engine or drop it slightly, will come off then with a bit of movement.

I probably nearly had it but just needed a nudge!

    All three are now fitted
    So each one individually....
Well ecu mount - bit of a pain, needed to be drilled to 12mm, broke two drill bits doing it!
But after that, piece of cake! Just bolts together
Gearbox mount beneath battery - nice and easy, second pair of hands would have been helpful for pushing the gearbox back in line
Gearbox rear mount - wish I had a press for this! Broke two vices trying to press that bugger in!
Oh and I just hacksawed the old mount our, time consuming but possible!

Overall driving impression - very good! Sharpened gear changes up, sharpened acceleration, the car feels tighter overall! A good buy but a small inconvenience to fit!

    What you saying for vibrations?

    They're noticeable and obviously so
But they're not actually as extreme as I thought!
I'll leave that to the Group A mounts
But yeah, it does vibrate more, and noticably.
But only at standstill, once you're moving you feel the whole vehicle tighten up compared to standard mounts
Going to be honest, if you like comfort and quiet, these aren't for you
If you want hardcore racing mounts, I'd probably say go for Group A
    These are you mid point
Not soft but not so solid that they shake your knackers off!

Yeah, got the same feeling. Really enjoying mine only something from the french plastic interior works it's way loose now and again and needs tightening up to stop any noises.

The 'Buffers' you mention are the metal inserts that stiffen the mounts up. I've just bought the kit off BakerBM and it looks really good, I would imagine that the vibrations will be a little more noticable with the inserts fitted.

Not looking forward to drilling out the hole to suit the new bolt but will give it a go some time this week.

    Pretty easy to be honest
Just make sure you get it tightened up good and proper!
