VTR Brakes? They bad?

Hi all, just got an 03' VTR, after driving a ragged clio needing a few things replacing the brakes on the saxo feel worse than what I'm used too?

Is it common that brakes are fairly squishy or bad..

Other than that and a squeaky clutch pedal, loved it.

Its a common problem but only when the car isnt that well cared for. Probably got air in the lines, try bleeding it first and obviously check for leaks and worn components

Saxo brakes are pretty shocking. I've recently driven a few other cars (C2, Passat, Corsa) where I've practically given myself whiplash when braking after being so used to the VTR's brakes.

Then again, my front pads are getting a bit thin, so that might have something to do with it.

If you want to be sure, change your pads and bleed the brakes

yeah my 1.1 after bleeding/new pads is still shocking, drove my GF's 1.1 206 and hers at x10 better, when i drove my dad vectra nearly put myself through the window.

I've driven my mam's 09 leon after driving my saxo. The brakes on that stop you instantly lol. And the clutch was soo sensitive too. But tbh for 02 i didn't think my saxo was too bad on the brakes.

Compared to other brakes saxo`s aren`t amazing, even on my citroen zx the brakes were instant.

My old 1.0 micra brakes i dare say are sharper then my vts breaks LOL.

    They are really dreadful.

personally I like the brakes on these cars. I hate overservoed modern car brakes. It may give you confidence as they need a tiny bit of pressure but I like something a bit more progressive. I've test driven a new Leon and when braking you have to be so delicate.

Badly maintained brakes are obviously cack. Poor tyres make a massive difference too.
One thing about the bigger cars like the leon is the stability under heavy braking is better due to improved suspension and chassis

When the brakes are warm on mine they are decent, don't half stink though. From cold theyre heartstopping, absolutely nothing until theres some heat in them, makes sliproads intense!

Think its just a common thing, even when I fitted 266mm ones on my old GTI they wern't great.

Its because the tyres, chassis and suspension have the greatest effect on stopping distance rather than how big the disc is.

Very helpful, cheers! Glad it's not just mine then! Got it's MOT coming up fairly soon so I'll be bleeding the brakes and checking the pads then!

I only have a 1 litre Mischief but the brakes are horrendous. I never have been one for tailgating, I generally leave more than enough room for the car in front but Iv found that now Im driving a slow ass 1.0 Saxo with brakes that wouldnt stop a pushbike I generally like to leave about 2 miles distance to the car in front and I start to brake about two miles ahead of the turn off or junction Im coming up to lol.
