Sticking handbrake :(

  1. #1
This is on my mums 1.1 forte has drums on the back, the hand brake sometimes sticks slightly but most of the time it does it if you pull off it'll un stick itself but i got a phone call today as she was stuck at work and the handbrake would not let go at all pulling off just dragged the back wheels locked up, i went and ive never touched drum brakes before so didnt really wanna take them apart in a car park, i took the wheels off the back gave the drums a whack (friends idea) and its fine now but dont want it happening again gonna take the drums off this weekend and try and clean them, anything i should look out for?

is this a common thing what normally causes it?

    Thanks

you might have to adjust the handbrake or replace the shoes if they damaged, major scuffing on faces of shoes. it could be that the drum itself is at fault and has worn unevenly. get a haynes manual mate will tell you everything you need to know.

The braking surfaces of the shoes can sometimes delaminate from the metal mounting - they look ok on a visual inspection but won't dissengage and jam wonderfully. Take the drums off and see if you can slide a feeler gauge under the braking surface of the shoe.

Just take the drum off and inspect the shoes and mechanisms, however if you are not confident brakes are not something you should mess with, take it to your local garage, is only a 10 min job to take them off and clean or replace them :-) so wont be too expensive

Do you have a clue what you are on about? A sticking handbrake can mean a number of things but if it was fucked it would not work at all!

could be a sticky mechanism, could be cables are too tight, could be shoes have come apart, could be loads of things thats why i said get a haynes and check all the bits, if not take it to a garge its like a 10 min check to see whats wrong then get them to sort it maybe cost you like £30 if you not confident of doing it yourself

i had this exact same problem with my old 106 and started happening again with my new 106 both with drums and the first time it happened it was same symptons as yours kept sticking then you go to drive off and it feels like you have left handbrake on and you have to pull away quite hard to release it, the mechanic at the garage told me after i lost all rear brakes on a major road thankfully didnt crash, they said the bearing i think it was gets stuck and seizes inside the drum i think this was a few years ago now, and only way to sort it was to take a disc cutter to the drum to get it out, this was a nice £240 bill, so like i said it was happening to my newer 106 which happens for about 6-8 months before it gives out altogether so i decided to upgrade to discs brakes with a vtr disc beam as its cheaper in the long run. hope this helps but that was my experience of this problem.
