what the hell is this noise? not driving my car with this.

  1. #1
Been hearing this noise for several weeks now but no where near as bad as in these videos ive uploaded. Drove the car today and this noise has suddenly gotten seriously loud. Any idea what this is? Seems to be coming from the engine or the throttle body inlet area. The noise seems to go when in neutral.
    cheers in advance.

I know why my air bag and engine management light is on but the battery light keeps flickering on and off and i think thats the oil light on too? I may have an oil leak also.

sorry for this one being upsde down.
  2. #2
    why wont videos upload?
edit: think they should work now
  3. #3
    you checked oil level?
  4. #4

Is there any oil in that at all?

Well you mentioned a possible oil leak, and if it does get that low, then YES! and cause serious damage the entire time.

several weeks running with next to no oil will ruin it.

Even the cars are feeling the pinch! Trying to make themselves more economical!

sounds very much like no oil. Had a clio in the other week like this, if you keep it going it will get louder and louder and start self distructing. The oil needs to be of sufficient height for the oil strainer to reach it, otherwise the pump wont suck any oil.

Well seeing as he said the ECU light is on and airbag light is on which is common. Handbrake lights on....well im guessing his handbrake is on. And oil light, guess his oils low if thats on maybe why its noisy...
  18. #18
dude get it topped up asap!
  19. #19
Why do people not check the basics before making videos etc.

If you have the EML on, get the fault codes read and the issue sorted before trying to guess other things.

Always check things like the oil level when you hear odd noises from the engine, although you should be checking it regularly anyway.
  20. #20
Sorry to but to just reiterate - you continued to drive round with no oil in it then wonder what its knocking and tapping? o_0
  21. #21
Your engines fucked. Probably wont last another 5 miles.

    Yes!!!

And your oil light is on!

You have Hydraulic lifters on that so they need oil to work, without out it they will tap like mad.

    And so will your engine!

15-W40 will do for now, DON'T drive it until you out oil in it!

But before you do make sure it is the oil, use the dip stick and check it, it should in the middle of full and low.

Could already be buggered mate, top it up with oil anyway but if the noise doesn't go then it may be new engine time.
  31. #31
Sounds like a pistons down ?

Give it a full service plugs and all should make a difference
  32. #32
It's on all 4, sound like it's the tappets and maybe a bearing knocking, my money is on lack of oil and a killed engine -.-
  33. #33
just checked the oil level and is was pretty much empty. filled it up to about the middle of full and low and the noise has pretty much gone but still there a tiny but when reaching higher revs. checked the sparks and they have pretty much had it too. So il be booking it in for a full service asap! thanks for all the help guys

a full service wont fix it. if the noise is still there once the oil is topped up, you will have done damage. how bad is hard to say, but you havent gotten away with it
  35. #35
Maybe it's having the hand brake on
  36. #36
    School boy error dude...

On the other hand, my rallye engine is tappy as fuck but they all seem to be and that has plenty of oil

You've got an electronic oil level check that shows up on the clock dial when you start the car. Even if you're slack with checking the oil visually (well via the dipstick), there's no real excuse for allowing the engine to be low on oil.

Engine is fucked though even it is sounds better, the oil is just damping the noise out now.

Don't think my model has that matey, not that i've noticed anyway. Could be a vts/newer model thing

Thats funny because on my R reg saxo I changed the clocks & when I switch on get an orange symbol on the dash(like a walking stick)flashes for about 5 secs & the oil level is fine btw.

So why is your handbrake light on?

Please tell me it's because your handbrake switch has gone, and that you're not low on brake fluid?

i have no idea why the light was on tbh. when i take it to the garage monday/tuesday il have a check to see if the light still comes on but if the fluid is low then i'd get that topped up too at the garage
  53. #53
Put some fresh oil in and run it for a week or two... You'll sharp tell if it's gonna fuck

Tbh you may have been lucky and the lifters were just dry but the big ends may not have suffered too much damage

Normally when the big bearings have gone there will be a notable loss of power, and dropping more oil in won't silence it

Wouldnt it be more wise to check you have brake fluid before you drive to the garage to get them to check your brake fluid? lol

Thats like saying, il put my seatbelt on when I get to where I want to get to.

No i`d expect anyone to look after their car in the 1st place,i`ll give an example(& not bullshit either)I pulled up outside my house yesterday & noticed water spurting out of my neighbours radiator so knocked on his door.He opened the bonnet sure enough their was a leak, the engine also had a bad oil leak it looked like someone had poured oil over it tbh a complete mess under the bonnet, Corsa btw.Things like this piss me off because they are avoidable & sorry to hijack the thread rant over.
  60. #60
i dont want to sound like a cunt, but with that many warning lights on the dash, did you not think to have it looked at?

thats fine to have a rant mate, i admit ive been a total twat about this. im going to check the brakes now. As for the warning lights, the engine management light and air bag light had already been on for a while and i know the reasons behind them. As for the oil light, i just never got round to sorting it out, and now i may have left it too late. Tbh i expect most of you guys to have a rant and slag me off lol. but thanks to everyone for the suggestions and help

mine is sorta like this but nowhere near as bad, i cant hear it when in the cabin only if i get under the bonnet . sounds a bit like a diesel on acceleration on low revs, should i top up with oil then? its still inbetween max and min marks so i dont see why it would be this though i thought saxo's just sounded a bit rattly anyway

i did a search on youtube earlier to look for similar problems to me and majority of comments are saying things oil related and spark plugs. My oil was low and my spark plugs are shagged so im hoping replacing the spark plugs will sort everything out + a good service.

I suggest you check your tyres as well.

    You dont deserve a VTS

... only joking , but to avoid the shit on here, id recommend learning the basics first like not ignoring the low brake fluid warning light, low oil warning, high oil temp...

I once killed an engine like this, but i did it on purpose cos it was a corsa
  73. #73
You may be lucky and a set of new lifters may be all you need but wait and see what they say when they look at it.
