problem with gearbox or clutch...

  1. #1
hi there. i have a 2002 vtr which has had a clutch put in little less than 15k ago, so i hope it isnt this. im experiencing a whirring noise when accellerating and going down the gears, i.e. decellerating. when i dip clutch the sound goes away, however it has gotten louder in the last week, still a faint noise but dont like things not being right on my car. any help of possible things to check would be a great thanks.

chercked for leaks of gear oil and cant see any, going to check the level tonight of gear oil anyways tho just to be sure.

the clutch release bearing is either dry or it isnt sitting right. looks like gearbox off again im afraid

Damn! The lad that had it before me seems to have been a right butcher like!! It's literally started to do it this week, everything has been fine for 15-20k!

As above, I would go with the release bearing too.

    Input shaft bearing if not

    I would check gearbox oil......

Worth checking but I dont think pushing the clutch in an our will effect gearbox oil.

I have got the same problem, if it's the release bearing dry or not seating properly how long will it go on for before finally giving way?

    Dear Fish 333.
I too would go with the release bearing aswell.
Sometimes if you have a budget factored clutch parts, these can wear
out quicker than O,E parts, for example an O.E clutch may do 50k to 60k in
between changes. Where as a budget factored part may only last 30k or
    20k if your unlucky.
What I would if I was doing that job on my own car, I would by myself
a new genuine citroen release bearing and I would also get myself a brand
new genuine citroen clutch centre plate aswell and fit both of them. I know
this means having to re-align the clutch plate again, but I think better safe
    than sorry.
The pressure plate will be ok to use again in my opinion, so you won,t
    need to renew that
    I hope this helps
    Vince.

Thanks a lot vince, you wouldn't know what these parts retail at? My mate works as a technician at citroen and has done all my work on my cars for years. Not only my saxo, but vauxhalls, Suzuki and vw etc. so he would be doing the job anyways and he wouldnt know any manufacturer better so should be a doddle for him to do hopefully!

i would of thought the sound would get worse when you dip the clutch.
not go away if it was the bearing,
i would be thinking drive shaft cv if it shuts up with the power off.

Does it whirr when on the spot in neutral not driving? Then go away when you press clutch pedal? If so that will be clutch release bearing.

If it's just when moving accelerating/decelerating, and goes away when revs drop/clutch is pressed in it will be gearbox/diff, check oil level and top it up may be low!

It is literally just when decelerating, a tiny bit when accelerating but not a lot. Oil level seems fine, and no leaks :/

Fuck this gonna run it to the ground and buy somethig half decent!! Used c1 n stick it on its arse on bbs splits, cheap commuter!!

Or do what the rest of the uk seem to be doing and get a corsa limited edition hmm what to do what to do.

Put it in gear where you hear it most (3rd?)

Go down a hill, get to about 5000k or where the noise is most obvious.

Let go of the throttle so its on overrun, and you can hear the whirring...

Press the clutch in. If you cant hear the noise now it will be your clutch release bearing.

If you can still hear the noise it will be your input shaft bearing (or generally knackered gearbox).

Either way, you can sort it yourself if youve got the right tools for less than £100 and a weekend... no need to resort to a corsa just yet

Yes this is the case!! 2nd more than anything a around 3-4000 rpm tho.

My guess would be gearbox then. You can pick them up on here or ebay for ~£50. Weigh your old one in or sell it to someone who recons them and you should get some of your money back.

Even if you can't fit it yourself, take it to someone who can or a friendly garage and they shouldnt charge more than £100 for it swapping.

Sorry forgot to mention noise does go away when clutch is dipped!

mines started doing something odd today. car is fine on overrun at slower speeds, sit at 70+ on the motorway and then release the throttle suddenly and all i hear is a loud whining / grinding noise. Only seems to happen when on overrun at higher speeds. Dipping the clutch has no effect. If you stop / slow right down to 20 or less and then accelerate again its fine. It's really random. It's had a new clutch on recently so i dont think it's the clutch. Does this sound like a new gearbox or something else? Car seems to judder when releasing the clutch when pulling away, so could it be the gearbox/engine mount that is knackered and the noise is vibration?
