Rear hub/wheel bearing

I mentioned in another thread that I was hoping to swap over the rear hub assembly from my old axle onto my new one. I managed to remove the hub of the old one today, sans bearings which split and partially stayed on the stub axle.

Question is, how easy is it to remove the rest of the bearing from the hub so that new ones can be put in? If this isn't too much of a job, is getting it back on too difficult?

you are safer getting the hub and bearing as one part from euro car parts. be about 80 quid

Damn, was hoping to re-use the old ones. Even if I could get a garage to press them in, you think it would be easier to replace the whole thing?

from what ive read yes it would. have you taken the whole lot off yet. the bearing busts into pieces when taking the hub off and leaves the inner bearing race on the stub pin. its a right mess.

do a search and see what other info comes up mate

Yeah, I have taken it off already but only on the spare axle which is fooked on one side. As you said, part of the race is still on the stub pin. This was the one I was going to get replacement bearings for, then remove the one on the car and replace it with the "refurbished" one.

Had a bit of a look around, some people seemed to think the bearings could be done with a vice in around 20 minutes, hence why I was thinking of giving it a go.

the only way to remove it is with a tool like this

    or maybe one of these

best bet would be a new hub to be honest

you can't get the bearing separately on a disc hub.

Fair enough, looks like I'll be getting the whole hub in that case

On another note, I'm now wondering whether or not it's the wheel bearing as there was no play when I jacked it up and it's just passed an MOT with it. Only symptom is a droning noise that's proportional to speed coming from the rear passenger wheel (sounds like a plane sort of haha). Another thread mentioned it might be the brakes rubbing (possible, as calipers were swapped when I changed my axle?)

yiou can get the bearing seperately its just you would need to get hub pressed and then buy a bearing from a bearing supplier not an auto accesorry shop like camberley auto factors as they will only supply the whole hub.
