Question on changing rings

  1. #1
Hi, giving my vtr a FULL service, doing the head gasket and cambelt and ive ordered some new big end shells so going to do it in one hit.

Going to change the bearing shells rod by rod through the sump, and whilst the heads off just wondered if anyone thinks its worth me pushing the pistons up while the rods are disconnected and changing the piston rings?

Just want a second opinion on whether anyone thinks its worth it? or if anyone has done this or can see any reason why not to?

    Thanks

If you're changing the big ends why not, pretty much a full engine overhaul new top end aswell I hope and seals for crankshaft

    Dear Valenta.
What I would, if I was doing that job on my own car Valenta, I would most
certainly whip all the pistons out and renew all the piston rings aswell. as you
will definately need to run a glazebuster down all of the bores
I would also do all the top end stuff aswell, like grinding all the valves in and fitting new stem seals. And don,t forget to have the head pressure chec-
ked and have the head skimmed to elimate any bowing
Renewing the little end bearings is a decision best made yourself, that one.
    I hope this helps Valenta.

Yes it basically is, just with the engine in the car, not that i cant take it out but at least its held upright with it in the car and i dont have to mess about driveshafts and gearboxes. Going to leave the crankshaft in situ so shouldnt need to do the seals, just unbolt the rods off the shaft 2 at a time.

Yes may do the little ends aswell and yes the head will be checked and tested whilst off. Changing subject just looking at your username, cant believe no-one picked that until 2012 when you did, thought that would have been the first to go lol

check the rings before removing the rods from the crank.

    Dear Valenta.
    Thank-you for your thank-you too
I do like my username for me it just has to be something really simple that
    I can remember easier
Back onto engines though, is your Saxo an 8 valve or a 16 valve Valenta ?
and also does it have adjustable tappets or are they hydraulic tappets ?
    All The Best

Being a VTR it's 8v with ajustable tappets.
Only the VTS is a 16v and has hydraulic tappets.
