hi im new to this forum (hence the first post) and have just aquired a saxo VTR for £400 which i thought was a very good deal only thing is it has 125000 miles!!!! does anybody know have i brought a sh*tter or if these cars can last as it has a full stamped serviced history, also it makes a very strange noise as if the exsaust is blowing only in 1st and second gear, ive read various websites to try and diagnose and sem maybe just gearbox oil, BUT obvs ive seen this site has a few saxo experts so hopefully will be able to diagnose my issue cheers and sorry for the silly/noobie questions!

VTR engines are quite good... some have much more miles than that on them...

But for £400 dont expect a minter, and maybe with that price you can spend a couple hundered to get it ok.

Try and give the gearbox some fresh oil, worst comes to worst change it wont cost much tbh..

Welcome btw, theres a few decent mechanics on here so theyll be happy to help.

yea i didnt expect a minter, but tbh the interior looks near brand new and there no scratches chips etc, its just a worry in regards to the loud noise when in 1st and 2nd, also i dont wanna spend any money on it as its only a car to travel 5 miles to work and back in and because of the milage i dont really wanna do much to it as once its died ill try break it and make the money i paid for it from parts

Parts are pittance. You could buy a new engine with low mileage for not a great deal. Can you post a video up of this noise or explain it better?

im cr*p with posting videos/pictures etc lol so only way i can describe it is it sounds like the exsaust is blowing from the front passenger side and slowly gets louder and louder the more revs i put in it, also gear 2 is a bit of a bitch to get into(not such a missing the gear but just have to sometimes thrust it in) but once in 3rd gear it seems all good , theres also a slight whirring sound too, hopefully i dont need a new gearbox as they always seem far too pricy for something like that maybe new gearbox oil is needed as ive been suggested that before

As long as it's serviced and you keep changing oil engine should be fine, mines on 125k and running strong :/
