What's this sensor?

  1. #1
Hi all, I'm really baffled on what this sensor is, I THINK its the air temp sensor but not sure, its located on the top of a vts throttle housing, right at the front above where the accelerator cable attaches to the butterfly valve...there are 3 other sensors on the same houseing (TPS, ICV and air flow meter), if you take it out it looks like a mini radiator fan switch (only in a black casing with a 2 pin plug running to it) soooo what is it and what's it do? Lol

I have a mk1 single plug vts, its really bugging me,

    Thanks

found a picture...(very hard when you dont know what its called haha)

    Anyone help please?

I always thought it was some kind of air temp sensor too. It's the only thing it can be really =/

Why do you want to know?

if its twin pin id defo say its the inlet air temp sensor, looks just like a coolant temp sensor only the area submerged in flow is significately smaller and the plug connection end looks identical to all temperature sensors

your thinking of the wrong sensor monkey...the air temp sensor looks like this:

the sensor in question is located at the front of the housing (item number 1 in the picture)

its the reheating probe dont ask me what it does because i dont know lol

    number 2 is the ICV
    number 3 is hte TPS
    number 4 is the IAT
    number 5 is the FPR
number 6 is the injector wiring i think

    item no6

ok so now we have discovered its the 'reheating unit' what does it do and what happens if its broken? lol thanks folks x

If there anything like on the volvo tb's in the focus st and the rs then they heat the throttle body to 30'c to aid with cold running in the winter.

    Could be wrong though.

ive heard its to do with cold starts

so it wouldnt cause a slight miss fire if it was to fail?
  12. #12
I took mine off, it might make it run a little sick when cold but once warm no different.
  13. #13
so what the hell is causing my random misfire? it only does it when it wants to, no patern at all, doesnt matter if its warm, cold, idle or moving /: its had a new coil pack, and sparks, air flow meter, coolent temp sensor, map sensor, you name it its had it...

    badly gapped plugs?
  15. #15
    nope, all gaped at 0.9mm
  16. #16
wiring problem loose plug broken wire dodgy temp sens ?
  17. #17
Could be a host of things to be honest. Random misfire's are the worst!

At least its a saxo and going through the sensors one by one won't break the bank

Are all the sensors clean? Other ones to try of the top of my head are the engine speed sensor on the front of the gearbox and the lambda.

  20. #20

Turned out that one of the wires in the gel (that surrounds the end of the plugs) had snapped on my IAT sensor, so new plug and we are sorted, cheers for the help tho guys, it was just hard to see as it was IN the gel haha x
