I have an odd rubbery chirping noise - Video

  1. #1

Righty then, so I've got a weird rubbery chirping noise from my car.

    The basics are:
    • it's not there when you start driving, it happens after say 2 miles or so
    • it's not related to engine revs, it stays constant with speed regardless engine rpm
    • I thought brakes, but braking makes no impact on the noise at all
    • I can't physically see anything rubbing or signs of anything contacting under the car
    • it's not really any louder outside the car / with the window open
    • it's annoying
    • best way I can think to describe it is as a rubbery chirping noise
    • the alternator belt is correctly tensioned
    • car drives fine, no eml or loss of power etc

Any ideas of what I can start to look at next? I've checked to see if what was anything stupid like the heater fans or anything, that's a negative.

    HELPPPP!

Could be one of the bushes wearing out?
Have a look at the wishbones and ARB for wear... you'll see if they're cracked and generally look shot.

I guess, it's sounds sort of rotational to me if you know what I mean?

cant really hear anything from the video but i know on my mk1 xr2 i replaced the clutch and release bearing with some cheap crap and i launched it, from then after it chirped away and it was the release bearing.
    it had knackered itself.
my VTR did this as well. it was sounding really weird.

Lesson- Thats not how you make a fast start lol.
you'll just burn out your tyres, clutch and it wont do anything else any good either. Peak torque is usually around 2.5-3k rpm lol.

True that, although peak torque on the VTS is something ridiculous like 5,200rpm lolz.

Either way, 6k sounds steep, admittedly my tyres are basically constructed of plastic and go by the premium name of WangSport DitchMong XL's, I struggle to get any sort of quick launch over 4,500rpm, it's wheelspin central.

Also you may break your clutch release bearing!

Haha, i've never driven a VTS, only know what a cammed VTR feels like...
But i couldnt imagine it being too good for an old mk1 anyway.. surprised it even revs to 6k, must be close to the redline lol.

Lol! At least it wouldnt take them long to come to the source of the problem, Either the nut behind the wheel, or the awsome WangSport DitchMong XL rubbers .

Back to the OP anyway- sorry for the thread steal lol. I'd just jack the car up and check the bushes first, doesnt cost anything to check and if they're worn you will be able to see. Cost pennies for new ones aswell... fitting them is another story though!
If they're all OK, i'd possibly put it down to the clutch release bearing... Dont suppose you've been doing any 'launching' recently? If so, thats probly the cause lol.

It sounds like your driveshaft shaft as gone. Mine sounded like this check your cv joint gators ain't split.

That's interesting, as I reckon they're on the way out anyway as they sound a bit too clicky to me, and I'd put them on my list to change.

Thanks for that, I'll put 2 shafts on it before I pull the box out lol.

rear wheel drive this is the case, with the FD if i launch it at much over 6k is wont move it just makes a huge 11 and lots of noise but wont move.
most drag guys agree when you say with front wheel drive just dump it, with a XR2 weighing 650kg on R888s with little more than 100bhp on a 6k launch it spins as the revs drop for about 2/3 seconds then grips at about 4K, bogs down a tiny bit then revs to about 7500rpm before i will change. it then chirps as i go into seconds.

if i launch it from 2.5K rpm i wont go faster.

    Shazam! That's a light XR2! Mental!

its a complete bare shell in my dads workshop awaiting some seam welding at the moment.
its a standard 1.1L mk1 fiesta shell, totally stripped out with holes drilled all over it and perspex rear, side and door windows, two cobra classics and an OMP with a 1640xflow on twin 40s with a lairy cam in it running through the 1.1 4 cogger.
i have a top speed of about 100
it should be built this summer so il post some pictures when its down with a brief progress thread.
