engine temperature light is on and fan wont cut off......

   car is saxo furio
   last night noticed that the fan was never cutting off and then the red light came on, normally the fan only comes on over half way on dial, took the coolant cap off and had a look to see if there was any in and it seems to be fine so topped up this morning and the fan and light is till on, but the gauge is only half way
   
   can anyone help me on this

   probs be a problem with a coolant temp sensor.

   My furio did this, fan also used to stay on for 20 mins after i turned it off.
   Was fine though not to say yours will be.
