Shocking VTR brakes?

  1. #1
Is it me or are the breaks on the mk2 vtr pretty shocking, slam your foot on the brakes and it still feels like your only touching the peddle gently, anyway, main question, what is classed as a good/sensible upgrade for road use - what do I need? pads disks and calipers?

    266 pads and calipers.

So you dont need new disks?

EDIT: Whats the best make to go for?

I didn't think my VTR brakes were that bad. Maybe you have an air lock or needing replacement fluid/pads ?

You can go for better pads or if you want to push the boat out upgrade to 266 calipers. You'd need new discs, of course, as your current discs are 247mm.

So basically I'm looking at discs, calipers and pads, for a DECENT brake setup I've seen people use brakes off a 306 gti? - Anyway how much should i be looking at roughly for the discs pads and calipers

I use brembo OEM discs and mintex m1144 pads and they bite nicely! Maybe your car is due a brake fluid flush?

maybe, maybe haha, so any 266mm breaks and pads will be fine?

Get a good set of pads, then a decent disc, and a good dot 4 or 5.1 fluid and flush/bleed the system well.

will do, couple of other things on the to-do list - I'll get there eventually!

I use MinteX discs and M1144 pads ( £110 just for the pads ) which is over kill on road use but it mainly gets used for track.

You could spend somewhere between £100-£150 for new front discs, calipers, pads and fluid. But, as mentioned above, you might just have an issue. Give it a good service or atleast a check over.

update your pads discs and fluid

my vtr brakes have mintex discs and pads all round feel fine, perfectly adequate for the the 90 horses in the stable

Depends what you are used to.

I owned a brand new car a few years back and the brakes were much sharper than the Saxo. My old GTI had 266mm brakes and they were still worse than the new cars I had before.

You can get some better pads and then replace the fluid + bleed but I wouldn't expect Wow type results as the brakes are not amazing in these cars anyway.

i wouldnt bother with bigger stuff unless your driving it hard

good pads decent fluid and new discs
    i run ap fluid
    carbon larraine rc5+
    30 quid cheapo discs

anyone with 266 even 283 with normal spec pads will get out braked i rekon
at mallory park i was outbraking a lot of cars into the hairpin (seans corner) i would stand by this setup untill going 4 pots tbh

266 and 283 just add a load of hub weight

as said its actually the cheaper option usually to fit bigger brakes i paid £70 for my gti6 calipers and maxtorq discs with hardly any miles on them and paid around £20ish for oe spec pads, however they are bloody heavy!

my house mate fitted 266mm 206 gti brakes and we noticed his piston was the same size as mine and his are pretty good got the whole set for about £40 (calipers, discs and pads) these are lighter than gti6 brakes and offer very similar (if not the same) amount of braking force

then what many people do when they go on trackdays is go all out on expensive pads, braided lines and decent fluid to the oem brakes, this is usually more expensive than the above two options, but people like it as it keep the weight down and can perfrom better over bigger brakes

if your really pushing the boat out then you fit aftermarket brakes which combine lightness with good braking power and size however very expensive! the 406 brembos are a good alternative as they use the same size discs as the gti6 set up but have very light calipers but the down side is that the discs are heavy unless you buy expensive floating discs

I run omp dot 6 fluid. brembo standard discs and omp carbon pads. and it stops lovely can out brake a lot of the faster cars too.
omp pads are about 2/3 of the price of carbone lorrain. i have found another company who do car bon brakes witch i will try when i use up all the sets of omp i got.
    they are called compbrake.

flush the fluid out, get some new discs and pads and adjust the bar thats on the bulkhead if need be. mine are pretty nerve wracking from cold but thats because the pads and discs are getting a bit tired now. once warmed up (few braking spells) they stop pretty quick!
