Gearbox/diff/clutch gone?

Went out in my mk2 vtr last night just come out of the road i live down went from 1st into second and as i changed no drive at all, the gearbox in the car feels normal but when you release clutch it just makes a sound that sounds like a broken release bearing but then stops after a second??

    Any help would be great.

sounds like either the release bearing has gone or something on the clutch assembly has given way/ broken, how does the clutch pedal feel, does it now sit lower i.e half a pedal? or stiff?

Could be clutch, release bearing input shaft bearing making the noise. but you say there is no drive?

There is no drive, clutch pedal comes back up aswell but along with like a thrush noise (release bearing)

Realistically its going to be something on either the clutch cover (i.e springs) or the actual pressure plate or the release bearing. These are all included in a clutch kit for just under £100 for a sachs/valeo kit anyway. The box needs to come out either way tbh as you cant guess, youd be unlucky for it to be the gearbox from the symptoms you have said, you say it goes in all the gears ok so i doubt its the box itself.

How hard were you driving it when you lost drive? and i assume you havent had any clutch slippage beforehand

Nope no clutch slip wasnt driving it hard at all
