stearing/knocking noise

   i have a knocking noise when i shake stearing wheel back and forth but it dosent seem to be the track rod ends it seems to be coming from something further up from the rod ends and also makes a nocking noise when hitting bumps on the road anyone know what it could be ?

   Further up? Like in the middle of the bulkhead?
   
   Possibly the centre tie rod for the steering rods.

   i held my hand around the center where both the rods go to from the track rod ends and a mate shook the stearing back and forth and seems to be around tht point i think
