Top mount bearings, what do they do?

   Might be a stupid question but i'm trying to figure out whats wrong with my car (it makes a knocking/cracking noise on turning sometimes and handling feels a little loose) but do these actually effect the steering if they go bad or are they just for the spring to swivel on because thats what it looks like to me,

   yes and no. they allow for the strut to move with the steering. but also allows for slight movement in the lateral motion of the suspension. but over time. the ball bearings wear causing excessive movement. hence a knocking.

   Thanks, im going to change them as im pretty sure thats where the noise is coming from so hopefully it will sort that out
