#2wouldn't bother just get another vtr engine and swap the cams over. save a hell of a lot of time and money.
-
#3As above vtr engine are cheap these days & it would be more cost effective to just to fit a lower mileage engine.
-
#4you 100% sure its rings and not stem seals?
-
#5What makes you think it's the rings?1 user thanked this post:

#6Defo not worth replacing rings mate
-
#7yay welcome to the club mine are on there way out, should be getting a new bottom end at FCS which i will get re built then spend a day swapping the bottom ends over

but i also could be pointed in the direction of where you can buy them from? ill probs jsut get them throug pug1off but would like to compare prices from different places -
#8First of all if you are buying new rings you need to know the size of your Pistons. 78.5mm is standard size but I bet your bore has worn.
Also, if you don't know 100% it is the rings you could replace them and not fix the problem. -
#9get ours from lindley engineering in nottingham
-
#10Cheapish engines then? anyone?
-
#11you dont have to follow everyone advise and buy a new engine, can be done quite cheap if you do it yourself, as i said im picking up and rebuilding a bottom end (with help from my mate), and should only take a day to swap bottom ends over and then you know your bottom end rings/bearings/bolts/headgasket are all good, also a good time to do a cambelt change, then you know your engine is in good working order, depends what means more to you spending more making your engine like new again or risk buying another engine which could go bang
however it is different for me as it'll probably be cheaper/be a similar price for me to refurb my 16v than buy another one -
#12Yeah I wouldn't but a new engine, but I'd defo check it is the rings causing you problems.
What is happening to make you think it is the rings that are the problem? -
#15It's quite obvious for me tbh, before the car was mappped it was stupidly over fueling and now my oil catch tank fills up very quickly, my car is giving itself an oil change every few weeks lol its obvious that the excess petrol has damaged the rings and now the oil is pressurising and coming out where ever it can lol
-
#16Oooo lol, are you sure your crank breather isn't blocked?Quote:It's quite obvious for me tbh, before the car was mappped it was stupidly over fueling and now my oil catch tank fills up very quickly, my car is giving itself an oil change every few weeks lol its obvious that the excess petrol has damaged the rings and now the oil is pressurising and coming out where ever it can lol
Just a suggestion as my VTR had what you have and it was a breather blockage
-
#18Is the pipe that runs around the head in to the sump?
-
#19Check that, check the rocker breather also.
What you described can be caused by bad rings but breather problems will cause pressure and blow oil out the dip stick, and any other hole that it can get out of lol. My catch tank used to over fill like every other day ahaa. -
#20I'm guessing the rocker breather is fine as that is where the catch tank is fitted to so it wouldn't fill up with oil if it was blocked? I'll see about checking the crank breather cheers
-
#21Ye lol, just thought I'd say incase you had some odd set up...Quote:I'm guessing the rocker breather is fine as that is where the catch tank is fitted to so it wouldn't fill up with oil if it was blocked? I'll see about checking the crank breather cheers
If you're gona change the rings you might as well get some new Pistons!! -
#22Ha you think I haven't thought about it! It's just gonna be a cheapo rebuild, however ill keep hold of my old bottom end and build it up when I can aford it with the pistons/rods from pug1off, get the crank/flywheel lightened and a set of 812 catcams I think they are should see me with 190bhp+ :-)
-
#23Ahaa sweet mate.
Did you check the breather that is next to the dip stick and goes into the side of the head? -
#24The car stinks of oil when its on, throws out blue smoke in the higher revs
