Quote after MOT failure.

Just been in for an MOT today and it failed on rear axle, classed as 'dangerous' and the CAT is leaking gases. Couple of tyres also. Picked up a rear axle from a scrappy for 80 quid and the garage has quoted £200 to fix it. They also quoted £120 for the CAT.

What would you guys expect to pay for these jobs? I only have a basic knowledge of mechanic work, as in I do my own services but not much else.

id say most will charge about £100 for axle swap

    where you from?

    that for a new cat?

    Yes I believe it's a new cat.

I'm from Manchester but getting the work done in Ipswich since that's where I work. The rear axle that i bought apparently needs to be stripped and parts put on from my current axle but wasn't entirely sure what the lad meant.

Even if it needs to be stripped and everything swapped £200 is excessive only takes a hour on a 4 poster ramp. Also new cats from Andrew page ( you got one near you in Stockport) are only £30 so well worth fitting it yourself.

Right so I've definitely been ripped off, I'll give the lad an earful in that case. He told me it would take 3 hours to sort the rear axle.
