    As said above hit pump with a hammer while someone turns your wheel had same prob with my MK1. Also had same trouble on my MK2 but that was ignition barrel if I wiggled the key powersteering would kick in again.

    Had this with mine, bought it with 'intermittent power steering', the electric motor thing was fried because the plug had melted slightly and shorted itself, so had to get a new one.

    Replace the relay.

    If still no luck, It's new pump time.

    The pump itself.

    Black thing at the front of the engine bay, down the bottom, passenger side. You'll see the reservoir on top of the pump, or connected to the pump by a pipe.

    ok.. and how is hitting it going to help? am i not likely just gona break it lool

    Mine did exactly the same, and hitting it is only a temporary fix. Just replace the pump, I got a used one for about £25 on here about a year ago and I've never had a drama

    All these comment's saying to beat the shit out of the pump.. Not one mention of checking the fuse?

    Mine was loose - hit a bump whilst driving and it would go off / on..

    Worth checking the simple thing's first

    Could be;

    low power steering fluid level
    Air in your PAS system
    PAS pump wiring disconnected, damaged or a different wiring fault
    PAS pump fuse blown
    Fluid leak
    PAS pump or your steering gear is defective
