possibly skipped cambelt help needed

    basically

i went to change the belt/waterpump on my 1.4 lupo and struggled to lock the crank in order to get the nut off so after looking on the lupo forum people have said they had just locked their camshafts and then turned it off

i had a go at this method and the whole nut and pulley turned and made a not so nice noise with it

after this i was only able to turn over the engine around 1/5 or a rotation and it would just stop

not going to start the engine for the fear of it being totally off and destroying my head

any suggestions as to what the next step would be

(posting here as the lupo forum is useless)

    Needs timing up properly, obviously.

yes i'm aware of that but what would you suggest the next step is from here as i clearly can't do it myself and starting the engine could possibly end in tears

You will have to find a mate who know's what they're doing..

Or get a mobile mechanic out

You'll have to take the belt off, time it up and then check it rotates over. Chances are the valves are touching pistons now

its booked in the garage pretty much round the corner for the cam belt change for tuesday

if i tow it there and just explain whats happened how much much work would be needed to correct it ontop of a normal water pump/cambelt would normally take

It depends because when you explain the situation, it may need stripping down do check for valve damage.

Its doubtful turning the engine by hand would bend the valves, unless you spun it over or moving the pulley with an air line or similar?

is this the engine with a extra belt at the top driving the cams ?

I doubt it would cost you any more by towing it to the garage, they need to time it up anyway.

Why were you pissing about with the crank nut when its due in a garage for a belt change?

Are you sure its not moving and your not just feeling compression - ie have you tried turning it over without plugs in?

If it has skipped a tooth, you could obviously take the timing belt off and sort it yourself, but I wouldn't bother if your having it all replaced anyway.
