Oil sump plug stuck

  1. #1
Went to change the oil on the car this afternoon and the plug wont budge an inch, iv tried using the square key, grips and shifters and all seem ineffective. Does anyone have any tips for removing a stiff plug without doing any damage to the sump?

Might be obvious but have you tried soaking it in WD40 and leaving it for 10 minutes? I had the same problem once.

use a 24 mm socket (could be 22mm actually) on a long breaker bar sod that square socket bollocks,

    Wd40 is rubbish....

Get your self a can of "plus gas" give it a good spray and leave for five minutes.. Will come out like its hand tight.

Each to their own, WD40 worked for me, suppose it depends on how tight it is.

Previously I've used heat, impact gun, impact wrench, hammer and chisel and still found some that won't budge.

Last on I ended up grinding the head off with a Dremel - the threaded section then came out with a chisel.

It should be warm anyway so the oil is thin to all drain.....

True but not everyone warms their engine up before an oil change.Warming it up not only allows for easier draining it also lets some of the crap thats built up in the engine drain away as well
