I had the usual often reported banging and cracking noise off the offside rear, I expected this to be the bearings in the rear axle, I couldnt find any thing wrong the car was sitting nicely, wheels at correct angles etc. I jacked the car up and heaved on the wheel and suspension but no noticable wear in the suspension arm. I did notice a small welded repair on the inner wing done by the previous owner for the last MOT. I discovered that the inner wing was not attached to the boot floor for about 10inches and that there was a small 3 inch crack in the boot floor. I seam welded the the crack and the joint between boot floor and the inner wing and the noise has gone.
I don't know if I am relieved or not, I am happy enough not to be sorting the rear axle but concerned as to why the seam should have seperated, nothing looks damage rippled or bent although the car has had a light knock on the rear bumper enough to slightly deform it but not push it out of line, is this common fault?
Any comments would be appreciated
Cheers Greg
