1.5D Problems starting and running

  1. #1
    Hi guys,

I have a 1998 1.5D Saxo, and I seem to be having some problems starting and running.

If I let the glow plugs heat up and try to start, it takes a long time before the engine starts, it tries to kick in and start and then eventually it'll go. This happens nearly everytime I start the engine now (apart from having it running for a while then turn off, and immedietely start again).

Once the engine is running, it used to be fine (initially I had a problem starting and once started it would be fine) but now running the engine is becoming difficult.

When I've started the engine, the engine will struggle to maintain idle revs, and if I rev the engine to 1000-2000 rpm the engine will dip it's revs a bit, then up and then after a while it will cut out and stall completely.

So I start it up again and rev the engine, to get it warm and the revs will continue to dip, maybe stall again until the engine gets warm. Once the engine is warm, It will seem to run fine.

I'm not a mechanic, and I don't know very much about cars, but I'm not completely stupid! It sounds like the engine is being starved of fuel, is this right?

When the MOT was last done (about 3 weeks ago) the mechanic said that because the engine can take up to 20 seconds to turn off after removing the key, it might be a 'stop valve'. Would a stop volve be causing the issues im having?

I would really appreciate some help on this, as running the car is becomming a chore, as I have to sit there and rev the car to warm it up before I make a journey. The car used to be reliable but It's having some issues lol.

    Thanks in advance,
    Adam.

When did you last service the car mate?

    Hi mate,

Since I brought the car I haven't had it serviced. My mate has done a few things, alternator belts been changed, and a dead glow plug got changed.

Any ideas as to what it might be?

    Cheers mate!

It could be a sticky/blocked injector,a tip for you though when the glow plug light goes out leave for a few more secs before starting it.The only other thing I can think of is the relay for the glow plugs being faulty.

    Hi Stevo,

Yeah I'll try that but I'm sure I've done that before. Not sure how to check the injectors though.

Would a stop valve not be part of the problem or does that just affect the stop of the engine?

Not sure about the stop valve, you could try some redex injector cleaner & a new air/fuel filter.
