Turbo seals or something else

Right.. I thought my turbo was on its way out but now I'm not as convinced

I thought it was due to it having play.. And the fact I wasn't running a dump valve at a bar of boost.. Obviously rattling the turbine shaft and letting some oil through

However it's getting no worse (although I'm not driving it on boost at all ATM) they only time I seem to see smoke now... Is when I'm cruising along in gear throttle closed for a while the open the throttle again I get a blue cloud up my back window

Sometimes I'll get it sitting at the lights for a bit, and occasionally when driving

I thought it would have worsened by now and the fact it's only happening when I'm coasting in gear with the throttle shut

When I was driving on boost and had just give it some then let off.. There would again be the a cloud but generally more so

Opinions? It could just be very early oil seal failure that I've noticed soon, and that fact I'm not boosting it is helping out, just curious as to why it's only leaking when I'm not driving or at idle ( very rarely smokes on idle and is only tiny amount)

Only thing I can think is the when I'm driving in gear and off throttle the turbine will be barely moving.. If at all... And this is when it's leaking a small amount into the exhaust???

Blackie, pull off one of your intercooler hoses thats leading to the intercooler, check if it has oil in the piping, if its a small ammount - i wouldnt worry, but if its a good ammount id clean it, then drive it, and then check if it re-appears, im only saying this could be a cause, ive had this with a turbo car before where my boost was going back to standard wastegate pressure.

Edit; actually.. in saying this, you have no oil fume-vent-return going before the turbo, might aswell scrap this

Might be barking up the wrong tree here, but possibly one of the stem seals?

Mate, what thrush said is actually correct check the nearest boost pipe silicone joint, it will show if there is an excess of oil, dubs had this all the time when seals on turbo were going you'd get leak from hot and cold side and it pools at the lowest point so intercooler inlet. Also yeah I agree stem seals at coast you have less pressure allowing inward leak to combust chamber

I was thinking this that's why I posted up

I'll be fucking foaming if it is tbh

I'm replacing the turbo on Thursday so we"ll get a better idea then

Also, I've not bothered with the boost pipe as if it's the seals on the exhaust side I'll get 0-minimal oil In there, it's not smoking enough to be ingesting oil.. It's just what's leaking into the exhaust or head

Thinking its gotta be either turbo or worn valve guides

It's had a full top end rebuild.. But if they're worn it'll still leak down

If i had to put money on it id say valve guides/stem seals, in my experience when they are worn they usually allow oil down into the cylinder overnight or after engine idling for long periods then when the trottle is opened you get a short burst of blue smoke slowly clearing away, the fact that the turbo is pretty new would make me steer away from that being at fault. Try whipping the inlet manifold off, if the guides/stem seals are going there will be more oil on the valves/inlet port not just carbon build up

Turbo is very old, head has just been rebuilt

But I think it's probs the valve guides

Stem seals, valve guides, worn bores/piston rings,
it's happening under vacuum so they'd be my guesses

Can only be head I just replaced tbh
