throttle position sensor

can someone tell me would removing, cleaning then replacing the tps stop a car from starting. im having trouble with my idle control valve so took both items off the car and cleaned them. when i replaced them the car shot to 4000 revs then spluttered and died. it will not start again. just keeps turning over. i also foolishly sprayed some carb cleaner into the butterfly valve with the engine off, so thought i had flooded the engine, but iv left the car for a day and still no joy, just keeps turning over.
i replaced the plugs tonight and still nothing, the old plugs were really sooty.

its ok to spray carb cleaner into the throttle body, its designed to be used for exactly that, how did you remove the tps? isnt it inside the throttle body side casing? , does the car even try to fire up?

it was below the idle control valve on the back of the engine. two tourque screws to remove it. i sprayed quite a bit of carb cleaner in the butterfly opening, but thought any residue would have evaporated by now. its not trying to fire at all. just cranking over. like i said it did start yesterday but made a really struggling noise then wouldnt start again. also noticed a bit of soot on the floor at the exhaust end. like its blown some crap through? it was running dodgy before with over revving and cutting out but now wont start at all.

It would still fire with carb cleaner in the throttle body. Im presuming you made a mark in the position the tps was before and put it back in exactly the same place just to make sure?

no i didnt mate. would that be what would stop the car from starting. any ideas how i would work that out? i thought it seemed a bit springy when it came off. like it was slightly tensioned :-(
