3 Cv boots in 6months!

  1. #1
Hi guys today i was putting new spacers on my car and I notice that my driver side cv boot has split. This is the 3rd time in 6months this has happened can I anyone help me to find out why?

    Cheers

At a complete guess here,i`d say it could be that the driveshaft are under pressure because of the spacers. Therefore the cv boots are wearing out out faster.

So why is it only the driver side. Could it be the drive shaft is on its way out because i did replace the n/s one because it was knacked about a year ago.

sounds a bit stupid and obvious..but nothing rubs against it at any time does it? a haging wire or unclipped plastic trim or somthing which doesnt hit it when u jack it up to have a look

jamie, its totally clear there nothing around it.

Orite mate, were the spacers split again? Also are the boots that are on there universal stretchy ones or are they the proper ones? Were they done at our place? If not were abouts is the split on them?

    hey,there spacers are split again.

the boot is a universal stretchy one, a local garage done it for me.
    its a little split
    not my driveshaft.

Did the garage supply the cv boots? Most likely there the universal shit ones the genuine ones are good and last long, worth the extra few £££ still.
Thts nex level about the spacer tho! lol never seen one broken like that.

Yea as said above mate if you get yourself a set of the proper boots, get them put on then it should last a lot longer, the stretchy boots are normally fine for standard cars but im guessing at your ride height the angle of the joint and the stretchy material isnt the best combination.

The braking on them spacers is savage ive not seen that before. Is they're play around the bore when there on or is it a nice tight fit? Also is it the same bore as the wheel or are they using spigot rings?

id imagine at that angle...the top of the rubber will be folding in on itself as it turns

when you get the new ones on..try greasing the outside of the rubber where it normally splits..may help it last a little longer before it give in to fatigue

I'm just gonna put my spare my drive shaft in and see how it goes.

Trust me im going mad lol, no play and it's a nice tight fit with no spigot rings.

    Will give that a go!

the pas side shaft is alot longer as it doesnt have the intermediate carrier..so the angles on the cv joint are alot less

the drivers side is alot shorter after the bearing...if you slam the car..think of that shaft as being a "Z" shape...the angles arent going to be great on the rubbers

nothing wrong with the universal type either in my view but generally they are a bit shorter than standard so need to be secured to the shaft further down so it isnt getting pulled out of shape on full lock and then stretched to breaking point
