Whirring sound - until clutch dipped?

  1. #1
    Hi guys
    Mark 2 VTR
Makes a whirring sound until I dip the clutch
Consistent - increases sound with speed
    dip clutch - noise disappears!
Not equivalent to something like driveshaft/wheels rotating - so rules out a bearing/driveshaft surely? Whirs around twice a second - wheel is definitely spinning faster than that?
Tell me I'm not going crazy!

This sounds more feasible as the noise goes when the clutch pedal is pressed
    Easy change/gearbox refurb better idea??

Easy to do, best to get a full clutch kit and also change pressure and clutch plates whilst gearbox is off.

I'll probably get a refurbed gearbox with a new clutch - that should cover my back!

I would agree with the release bearing, you'll soon tell if its fudged once you take the box off anyway, whatever you do don't get a cheapy clutch kit. Valeo all the way IMO. Doesn't sound like gearbox personally but i couldn't guarantee that without hearing it in person.

yeah clutch release bearing, mines been squealing for over a year now and still going strong Starting to clunk like fuck now though, gonna get it changed next month...

Yeah it would only be replaced with proper parts!

It's just a whirring noise - like something spinning...

    Mine does it too.

    4k old clutch kit..

Had 2 clutches on the 8v too - both started 'whirring' after a few thousand miles.

Next time the box is off.. this will be going in : http://www.rallynuts.com/citroen-mot...e-bearing.html

Just annoys me coz it's so consistent!
That part is only for 16v apparently!

It will work in any saxo box mate

I used a VTR release bearing in my 1.1 box on my 16v. The clutches are different - the release bearings are the same

    Ahhh
I might get a refurbed VTR box, with a Valeo clutch and that uprated release bearing

    Thanks

just so your aware..the probs IS a clutch bearing

there are 3 diff types of reliase bearing for a saxo..so buying one may not be the right one

if changing youd be daft not to get a clutch kit..as said valeo or better

decent motor factors will supply you one from your reg thatll have the right bearing

it could also be the sheath that the bearing sits on..that bolts to the box on the input shaft..it may have detached from the box...very unlikley..but it could be

EDIT- that bearing saxova posted..will be the wrong type for a 02 car as your profile states

    Thanks blackie!
I'm thinking will this solve it:
    Refurbed gearbox, Valeo clutch kit

Is there anything else you'd recommend?

i doubt your gearbox will need touching mate..if you want to spend out then that's cool

but id say it would be a waste

for the price of a box these days..refurbs are something a saxo should never really see now, more cost effective to be a decent second hand box

I am in two minds coz I could buy another box, but it could just go tits up even quicker coz it's second hand :/ unless I buy a second hand recon!

i very much doubt there will be any issue with the box unless your already experiencing some

so i wouldnt say you need to touch it (less i missed something you posted)

so you box should be fine..if not another member you can trust should be able to supply a decent one..not often they go, ppl can be unlucky...but you could have the same sore luck with a rebuilt box tbh

In theory, if I get a Valeo clutch fitted will that involve the release bearing being changed?

At least I know what I'm looking for and in all honesty I don't see why people skirt around paying that, it's not that much for peace of mind!

Shall see what eBay is saying too

Yeah a Valeo clutch kit is usually around the £90-£100 mark, worth paying that tiny bit extra to know you're getting a decent one imo.

That's not bad at all to be honest, fitting charges are different though! Not something I will be attempting, wish I could!
