Battery/Alternator problems?

So, last night I hopped into the saxo and was merrily driving along and all of a sudden the speedo and rev counter needles stuck and wouldn't budge? I continued to drive until i could get pulled over somewhere, turned the car off and took the keys out... The needles still didn't move.. fuel gauge and temperature ones were working just fine. So, I turned on the car again and still nothing. The car was driving perfectly fine though...

Then the car made a funny wee beep sound and my lights went out and then the speedo and rev counter started working again? Turned the lights off and on again, done the usual light checks and they were working grand but my dash lights were super dim. Car was running normally. Pulled in and went to stop and start the car again but this time it wouldn't start.. was turning over for a split second and that was it. Finito. Since the rev counter and speedo needles started giving bother last night, the battery warning light was flashing intermittently, suggesting a loose connection? I checked the battery for loose connections and everything seemed okay... kept trying but to no avail!

Had to get my boyfriend to come rescue me and jump-start the car. Boom, car started and turned it on and off several times with no bother, and all the electrics were working grand with no effect on the running off the car, as would be expected from a dodgey battery or alternator.. The saxo seems okay now...

Any suggestions for what all this could have been down to? It has me and my mechanic baffled!

Check the wires to the alternater especially the the black one. This happened to me and the wire connector was very corroded and snapped off so was not recharging the battery.

Just to be on the safe side & eleminate it if you have a multimeter then start the car & check the voltage output of the alternator, good advice already given though.

Try double checking the 3 connectors on ecu, and then try the main round plug for the loom, your car hasnt had front end damage has it? Try a multimeter from the live onBattery to the alternate and make sure you have 12 v. Then the same on starter and the earths. Just what I did on mine when I had electric problems.

Just had a look at wiring diagram and everything that is happening to your car passes through ignition switch, so check fuses and the ignition switch 2. Hope this helps
