Cat query about obd ?

  1. #1
Ok so i seen some sites with cheap cats quality prob shit but only plan to be on car for a couple of months as just needs to pass mot then will put a cat replacement pipe on.

So mine is a 97 VTS with centre cat but my query is about obd am i right in assuming mine has no obd ?
  2. #2
If you mean on board diagnostics then every saxo no matter what year has it mate.
  3. #3
Yeah thats is what i meant thanks for letting me know i need one with it, so why do they sell ones without obd that seems kind of pointless what use would it be as i assume the obd reports to ecu and throws up eml if not there of course im just guessing so may be completely wrong ?
  4. #4
Well kind because you plug a scanner into the obd port to retrieve the fault code/s.All saxo`s have the port yours is located under the dash(passenger side)near the fusebox.
  5. #5
Yeah i undertstand that as on the veccy you used to be able to do a wire trick to read the fault codes.

So i suppose one without obd would not register to the ecu i guess ?

Heres the cats im referring to

    http://www.cats-direct-shop.co.uk/ci...Recordset1=131

    http://www.cats2u.co.uk/advanced_search_result.php?keywords=CITROEN%20SAXO %201.6%20Petrol%20Cat

As you can see both the ones for mine are no obd which is why i asked the question as i cant seem to find one with obd for my car ?
  6. #6
Can anyone hell with this ?

Mate google bosal exhausts you`ll have more luck on that website because they supply citroen with their oem exhausts.Or buy a used one off here.

The later saxos (3 plug ECU) run a second lambda after the cat.

    So it reads to me
"none OBD" is no second lambda
    "OBD" with second lambda

I think that site complicates things, try my guy across the road from me

MOTOR DISCOUNT CENTRE - Tell him, Reg No. - Year and engine size - simple

    GeeDawg,

Your '97 VTS will have a single plug ECU, the generic fault code readers off ebay won't work on your model, the only thing that'll work for the DIY code reader is a Lexia3 circa £80.

I think there was an EU mandate which was agreed by all manufacturers to have a fault code system (OBD), first appearing in '96 then a more universal OBDII in 2001 - or something like that. Wiki will have the lowdown on it.

What it means is > 2001 Saxo's can have a basic level of fault code reading on a bog standard universal reader. < 2001 saxos are a bit odd. I don't believe I've heard of anyone successfully reading the codes from universal reader (I have a 2002 model and I originally bought a ELM327 code reader from a chap who had a 2000 saxo and couldn't use the system. That said it was crap on my car so I just plumped for the Lexia3). The Lexia3 is a a copy of the code reader systems used by Peugeot/Citroen - which has a lot more functionality, diagnostics and testing procedures.

EDIT: so in answer to your question... Try it and see where you get. The plug is on left hand side of the passenger side, there's a rectangular bit in the dash towards the bottom. Pop that out, and you'll see the connector and fuse box.

I tried it on my 51 plate 3 plug ecu and it works, only had 1 fault though.

Your Lexia3 sounds damn good. My mate is a top mechanic at Citroen Slough so any real probs i ask him.

Sorry, it's late and I confused you with the Original Poster.

Lexia3 is good, great even, especially with 3 cars at the house which can use it. But Citroen mechanic wins hands down I think!

Its a good investment i suppose but i can get a second hand cat and lambda for that cost and would a machine like this tell me if the lambda or cat are fucked its just a thought as salas may tell me something if thats the case ?
