Question about rear discs

  1. #1
Ok so i got hold of some 14" steel jobbies to put on car whilst i refurb me alloys but have come to a bit of snag.

So i changed the wheel over everything seemed fine then went to drive forward a little and heard a catching sound from the rear upon closer inspection it seems as if the metal shield thing behind the rear brake disc is catching slightly for some reason ?

I have noticed the front dont have this shield thing sorry best way i can describe it lol.

What exactly is this shield and what does it do and can it be removed easily enough otherewise i cant use the steel jobbies as im not liking the sound it makes grrrr.

Car in question is a mk1 VTS

    Any advice would appreciated

They're the wrong steels for the car, the shield shouldn't catch at all on 14's as the VTR wheels are only 14's as well.

iirc the Shield is only a dust shield or something similar?

Well i got them on ebay and listing said they where from a Saxo of course tyre size is different but thats not going to make a difference.

Oh well i suppose it can sit on them but i cant drive it with them plus of course when purchasing them i can only go on what the listing tells me as i dont know how else im supposed to check as they bolt on but thats about as far as my knowledge goes lol.

could always grind off some of the dust cover so the steelies fit over.

only thing i can think is maybe they are ford fitment and he might have had them on a drum rear beam which dosent have these covers so he wouldnt have known any difference however beign ford fitment should mean they would hit the rear of the arch so doesnt really explain it

Yeah as i said they fine on front just this shield on the rear it does not scrape all round but as soon as i moved it it sounded like it was hitting something i will have to jack it up again and let off handbrake and see where it hits the shield then if need be grind a bit off.

Admittely i have not driven anywhere with them as soon as i heard that noise i thought it was not the best idea so just pushed her back into parking space as car off road anyway due to mot failure grrr

At this rate im never going to finish these bloody alloys lol

So i sussed out what the problem is i found that some of the bolts are longer then the others i.e the locking wheel bolts and a few other so whilst fine with alloys they are to long for the steel jobbies now i just gotta find some replacements which is proving difficult as all the ones i can find are chamfered at the top rather then flat grrr
