Just replaced my old discs, pads and shoes and the braking doesn't seem as good. I have heard they need bedding in but how long will this take and whats the best ways of doing it
New brake discs, pads and shoes

#1
-
#2drive it round for a couple of hundred miles
-
#3Did you wipe of the layer of film on the disks? and on the drums?
Also about 200 miles they say to "bed" in (brake carefully and don't apply a lot of pressure unless you need too!)
Also did you happen to take the brake lines off or not?
Air might have got into the system, or you could have seized one of the calipers!
Those are a few options to look at
-
#4There was no film on the discs. Also I didn't replace the drums but I used brake cleaner. Didn't touch the lines. Ok I will give it a few hundred miles and then see how they are
cheers

#5There is ALWAYS a film on the disks, Its not a plastic film, its a layer of grease to protect the disk from corrosion when its boxed up and not in use. Take the wheels off and wipe the film off using brake cleaner and a clean cloth
-
#6you cant see the film on them the film stops them rusting before you fit them lol your ment to wipe the disc with a spirit
-
#7Oh sugar, my bad
-
#9Time to strip them down again and clean the pads disks drums and shoes with brake cleaner.
Pretty much the first rule of brakes is to clean all metal surfaces with brake cleaner and a clean cloth. Least you will know for next time. -
#10I cleaned the shoes adn drums, just didn't think about the discs, so won't be too bad. Plus I got wide spoke alloys so may not have to strip the wheels off
-
#11your pads are going to be contaminated so no matter how much to clean the disk the pad is still going to have the transit grease on them.
-
#12Ok cheers
