Cams/Pullys

    Hey guys,

Sorry for the excessive posting but I've reading a lot of information on cams and pullys but can someone explain to me briefly what they are and used for so I can come to some sort of understanding.

    Thank you.

the camshafts move the valves in the top of the engine. These control how much air gets in to the cylinders.
By upgrading camshafts the valves can open for longer, filling the cylinders with more air. With a change of fueling as well you get a bigger bang and more power.

A fast road camshaft like the Cat cams 1321743 will improve mid and top end power, with no real noticeable downsides. Be aware though that fuel consumption may be worse.

Aftermarket pulleys are often lighter so there may be a very slight reduction of parasitic engine losses, but the main reason for fitting is ease of adjustment of the camshaft timing and they look prettier than standard.

if its an 8v you need a pulley for adjustment.

If its a 16v lump then the j4 ones are adjustable as standard.

For the 8v the Newman Ph3 is popular. Not sure how it fairs as an everyday driver.

I personally like the Cat Cams 4901202. This has a lot more valve lift so has more duration than the Newmans, this might not make any more top end but its a more drivable camshaft profile.

Both really require a remap to get the best out of them.
