Gearbox issues.

   VTS engine with a 1.1 box.
   Recently had a problem where the gear linkage popped itself off and was stuck in 3rd gear, put the gear linkage back on and some other problems started to arise.
   
   It whines in 1st gear, and when I put it into 2nd if I accelerate it pops out of 2nd gear.
   
   Any ideas, fucked gearbox..? :/

   Sounds like what my old vts's gear box used to do
   That popped out of second when you floored it, it ended up locking up on me so replaced gear box and it never did it again.

   A mate has offered his 90k GTI box fitted for £95 all in.
   
   Just wanting to see if there was anything I should check before chucking my money away.
   
   
   Is there much of a difference between the 1.1 box and a VTS/GTI box?
   Will it feel slower?

   The 1.1 boxes and Vts/Gti boxes have similar ratios so i doubt you'd notice the difference. Vts/Gti boxes are a bit stronger. Win win!

   Cheers man, think £95 for a GTI box fitted is a bit of a steal so I'll lap up that offer and then see how it goes.

   Get the gti box bought mate. tho watch the sensors arnt differnt but handy changed from your old box

   It'll only be the speedo sensor that might need changing depending on box, Saxo boxes are all electronic speedo anyway so no changes needed

   Some of the reverse switch sensors have different connectors too. Out of all the gearboxes i've removed/refitted i've only seen it once though so chances are it will be the same.

    Fit a clutch kit while your at it not very much extra work involved might save you a lot of hassle later on

    sound like the second gear syhcro has gone. also if it whining could be the bearings starting to go.

    Thanks for the replies guys.
    
    The mate who's fitting it has his friend helping him and they've both been in and out of 106's/Saxo's for years and know the ins and outs of them when it comes to building and stuff.
    
    Clutch was recently replaced about 7k miles ago anyway so shouldn't need a new one, still feels fresh and nice so not gonna bother with a clutch.
    
    Hopefully the GTI box won't make it feel slower than the 1.1 box, as it did feel pretty quick with that box, a lot quicker than my old 106 GTI but then this 16v engine has a bit more done to it.
