Is it worth buying second hand ones or should i buy new.

My gearbox is whining so i bought a good second hand one, but while its off im gonna replace the shafts as well.

Are all VTR/VTS the same: phase 1 / phase 2

    Thanks

Depends on if you know the person & there is some sort of warranty,if not its a case of you pays your money you take your chances.

is there anything actually wrong with your shafts at the moment?

bit pointless if theyre fine, when theres a chance the 2nd hand shafts might not be as good

Depends on the condition of shafts you are buying, if theres no play in the CV joints you should be OK. And yes the shafts differ between mk1 and mk2 at the hub end

Ive got some grinding and droning noise from the whole front end, im 100% the box is whining so im changing that, the other noise must be driveshafts. Even there when in neutral and clutch down. Proper bad tonight at 3000rpm around 70mph

Dont wanna put it back together and it happens, rather change them

Ive had these on my last two saxos and one on my mums 106 and have done thousands of miles including very spirited driving and have been just fine :-)

Ref difference ph1/ph2 - research tapered Vs non-tapered shafts.

    Good luck sorting it.

Might be worth checking the bearings anyway. My driveshaft spat all its grease out last year, bodged it and put the noise down to it having run dry. Bearing fell to pieces a few weeks back, and with the old shaft in there was no noise on the new bearing!

Reason why i want to change the shafts as well is because this car has not been looked after at all by a friend, id feel much more comfortable knowing the front end was 100%

I'll buy new and get it done

    Thanks

Just bear in mind that there are 2 different ends on shafts. One type has a tapered end the other a flat end.

So if i buy shafts for a phase 2 2001 they should be right, or should i take mine off 1st, if i do that i have no way of getting about and my mechanic wont wanna fuck about ???
