ps2 in car??

    im wanting to put a ps2 in my car, i have a rough idea on what needs to be done.
    my main consern is a good monitor to play on, would a ripspeed 7" flip out be of any use or would it not connect?

    has anyone fitted one in there car and how did it go? many problems ?

    also a rough cost would be helpfull

    Got a play station in my range rover. 3 screens, two in rear headrests one in dash. Wasn't difficult tbh. Screen will have RCA input most likely. Output the ps onto that format. Remember you'll need to power the ps too.

    i was thinking in using a ac converter thingie, iv seen some for like£30, should do the job right?

    so with the right conecters one of them cheep ripspeed ones will make do??

    if a ps2 goes well and i upgrade my 360 the 360 will be replacing the ps2 , maybe mounted by bungee cords or something

    Yep any screen will work tbh. Although you'll need to review the quality of them yourself (obviously I don't know them all!)

    flip out screen - turns out I couldn't. not all flip out screens support the composite input (red white and yellow) - they only have an output for additional screens in the back of the car/sun visors.

    power for the ps2 was also my main concern.. I read stories that ac adapters just ran your battery down completely as the console was drawing too much power - even when your engine was running! you'll need to upgrade your battery to a pretty decent one, spend a few hundred quid on a decent flip out screen, not halfords shit, and then it's like £60 for a direct power supply from the battery - all in all you're spending about £400 on a ps2 which was released 15 years ago? is it worth it?

    When I bought my saxo - it came with a PS2.

    2 cheap universal headrests and a flip out screen in the middle.

    Was running off a power inverter.. Could play for about 1 hour with engine off, 2 subs / 2 amps / ps2 / 3 screens / comps.

    Would start fine after a hour.. could play for 2 hours if you wanted to - but you'd have to bump the car.. Standard battery.

    Could play non-stop with the engine on.

    lol @ £400.

    You want my old stuff to keep the cost down?

    I'd post the power inverter / flip out screen for £30 posted. No use to me anymore.. Might even have some of the cables knocking about.

    You wouldn't go and buy all top spec stuff to run a ps2 in a saxo.

    No matter how much you spend - you ain't going to improve PS2 graphics lol

    Not sure how much the prev owner spent.. but it worked well for 2 years. Then I stripped the car - so it's just sat in a box.

    If you was going for a show car - yes you would spend lots and probably use a ps3 / xbox.

    For the kid's or mates to play grand turismo in the back - no need to spend 100's

    Playing a ps2 with a poormans spec video cable plugged into a 6 inch cheapo screen, after having to install a bigger battery and a converter?

    Then a playstation is not built to endure extreme temperature differences let alone UK road surfaces. How about buying a PSP and get rid of the money + time waste + aggro when your battery runs out. Then you'll face questions such as oi mate why you ain't got a ps3 in there then mush.

    Why would you want a ps2 or any console in your car?? I just dont get when you would use it unless your a full on stoner

    I doubt you'd find a new screen nowadays that doesn't support composite. Bit of a mute point tbh.

    Power is the last problem - a ps2 draws 79 watts on full bore, less whilst idling. So about the same as your headlights. So you don't need a new battery, far from it. Just consider how long you'd leave your lights on for without the engine running - it's the same basically.

    PS2 power inverter - £15
    PS2 itself, with controller - £20
    Screen - £50
    Misc cabling - £25

    Total (from nothing in car to fully working, playable console) = £110.

    im wanting a new head unit thats ware it came from realy, watch movies on long trips with the girlfriend or play games on long trips with the lads, im not wanting to wow people, although the odd "ohho" would be nice.

    if i had the right screen and its only around £70 to hook up a ps2 for the entertainment of it on long trips it would be worth it,

    the real point of this threads was to see if its just as simple as plugging it all in
    and if id find any hidden costs .ie. bigger bat + alternator
    (would hardly be used with the engine off)

    ahh yeah would only be able to play when cars off or have sum way to use controller when car on an moving an use in car controls when the cars turned off... would love to see this done by someone be the best thing ever

    Buy a ps2 slim, the later model to avoid to avoid overheating. Takes some bodging but it will fit in the glove compartment nicely. I run mine with a 600w power inverter, (overkill I know but I go camping a lot and it's real handy) never had a battery worry as it has a low power warning and cut off and I've played for hours on end. I'm using a Navman 420i which is basically the same as the Ripspeed. With the RCA inputs. The only trouble I ran into was unless the inverter is True sine there will be interference on the screen, (not in all cases) bit this is solved my testing the red, white and yellow connectors and earthing accordingly, I soldered a wire to my yellow (video) and the interference is gone. Happy days.

    I got power from the inverter from the radio if you're wondering, the inverter is hidden nicely underneath the glovebox with the ps2 inside. Bit of a squeeze against the fusebox to the left but it will fit. Remember to switch off your radio when you turn the inverter on though as a sort of power up procedure to avoid any spikes.

    or get an older ps2, and take it apart to run a power wire straight into the 12v needed by it, then you dont need a power adapter either
