service

    Hey guys.

Im a university student and pretty low on money. My 1.5d saxo i dont think has been serviced for a little while and as i now use it for work i want it to be tip top. I cant really afford a full major service as this can cost up to £200 in some places or just below and i cant get it done with my next mot as thats nearly a year away.

I was thinking about doing it myself, i figured buying the parts myself and fitting them would be cheaper than getting the service done. I know a fair bit about cars and but never done a service before. what tools do i need? and what main parts are ussually replaced?

    cheers guys!

Try eurocarparts type ur reg in and search for service parts and get prices. Will be much cheaper. Just get the parts as and when you can afford them. they did have a sale on not sure if its still on. EBay is ok for tools like sockets ect just got some deep sockets from there 8 quid posted. Good enough for the job

shouldnt be that much for service parts for it done my last one for less than 50, do you know when the last service was and what was done? things like spark plugs only need changing every 40 000 miles i think it is. mainly oil change pollen/air filter change or clean, fuel filter if needed and check over car like brakes see what there like

a few bits of the service is missing as the car was stupidly cheap but i replaced the air filter only a month or two ago so thats sorted. i wonna really just go from the front to the back and check all the things i come across. i know the glow plugs need chainging as they look rusty as shit so im assuming they were put in along time ago

Glow plugs do get rusty looking as long as the car starts & runs properly then don`t worry about them.Change the oil/filter, fuel filter & air filter. Then take the wheels off check/adjust & clean out the rear brakes & look at the condition of the front brake pads.

I can do you a FULL service for £130.

    Oil + oil filter
    Fuel filter
    Air filter
    Coolant replaced
    Brake fluid flush
    Power steering fluid replaced
    Screenwash replaced
    Gearbox oil replaced.

I can also negotiate a Full+Extra service which would include replacing thermostat, glowplugs and diesel leakoff pipes. Approx £45 extra.

I'd also check the car over in the process of service and point out and other issues you may have.

I'm based near Gatwick, so not a million miles

well i would ask you to do it for me but as mentioned above i want to find a cheaper way (£70) on just spending on parts and doing it myself. I replaced the air filter alreadya nd will be fine doing the other filters.

I think the breaks should all be fine too to be honest as there is new callipers on it and i can see nice thick pads on there.

And as for the plugs i think im just going to change them anyway as sometimes when the engine is hot it wont start as smooth so might jsut do it to be sure.

Before you chang the glow plugs run the engine up nice & hot,the plugs will come out easier.

Things expand when they get hot,so in theory the plugs will come out easier.

Warm oil flows better so you get more of the dirty oil out. you will also need to buy a 8mm square sump plug tool or you wont be able to drain the oil.

If you don't have the correct tools, i.e something to help you get the oil filter off and the dump drain tool then these needed to be added to the cost of doing it yourself. Worth investing in for the future.

    £25 for oil and filter
    £5-10 for air filter.

That's all that needs to be done in a really sparse basic service.
Fuel filter and replacing the coolant would be a benefit but not essential if you haven't got the money.

yeha this has been mentioned. oil filter needs doing and so does the fuel filter, air filter i replaced recently. i think all the bearings and breaks are fine but will get my mate to check it all over.
