Need help with overheating and erratic idle.

I bought a citreon saxo mk1 vtr about two months ago, been fine till now(well apart from the top gearlinkage going lol). But pulled up in tescos the other day and it overheated and spewed coolant out even though the cap is on....then ever since it overheats and now the idle when first switched on will be at 1.5 rpm then go to 2 rpm then back down to 1 and so on.

Theres no mayo in oil, theres no oil in coolant theres no white smoke/steam from exhaust apart from a bad smell...im thinking headgasket but im not sure?

    Any help would be appreciated

    thanx.

Get a compression test done for the hg & a pressure test for the cooling system.

tbh im thinking its defo the head gasket as its now drinking fuel to although its not really losing much wtaer about half a litre this week but when ive driven to work i look under the bonnet and u can feel intense heat and theres a little dribble of water from the header tank but the fan is coming on and theres a bad smell as i said from the exhaust.

    could it be the thermostat?

if a headgasket goes smoke would come from the exhaust be it white black or blue but no smoke is coming from mine?

    so confused lol

i seem to have fixed the erratic idle, one of the fuel pipe jubilee clips had come lose and was spewing fuel out lol tightened that the erratic idle has now gone.this would also explain the high fuel consumption lol

but the overheating still persists, its just cooking my brain there's no mayo in oil, theres no oil in coolant the fan kicks in, the gauge in the car rises then when the fan kicks in goes down but its still overheating, no smoke from exhaust apart from a dodgy smell.heaters work inside car fine and theres no loss of power.

water does sometimes trickle down from the rad cap but the cap is fine, but if i take the cap off the water floods out lol,is it head gasket or what?

its now even melted the top off my dipstick im usung the car for short journeys to and from work doesnt get to hot but im worried its gonna fuck it up!1
