First thing, is it just the boot that's gone or is the joint knocking? If it's the boot thats replacable, if it's the joint itself then it's new shaft time.

Outer boots are the ones on the hub end of the shaft, i.e. just behind the wheels. Inner boots are the ones on the gearbox end, or in the case of the drivers side, the one on the end of the split shaft.

Honestly, if it's an inner one I would give the job to a garage. If it's the outer then you can get universal boots and stretch cone tools off ebay. They are a right arse though, and a garage will have proper tools.

First of all do you have the tools to do it? 30mm socket, a big bar of some sort to lever the ball joint out, a big torque wrench to torque the hub nut back up to 250nm?

    Not true,
Had a 4 month old shaft on the 1.0 that split it's boot and was knocking its tits off above 60mph.

Replaced the boot and replaced the grease and it's fine, no noises at all.

Basically you take the old one off and slip the new one on. Its stupidly simple.

    easy enough to do yourself
    jack the car up
    take wheel off
    drain gearbox of oil
knock the bit out of the nut thats been knocked in with a hammer and flat screw driver
get a mate to push on the brake pedal undo 30mm nut with socket set and long bar - its gunna be pretty tight
free the knuckle from suspension or from below - may need a bar
    slide out drive shaft
reverse to put one back in ....

if you dont have the tools to torque it up just do it up as close as it was before and get a garage to torque it up

Take you a hour if your quick

    cost me £15 scrapyard

    or £65 from citroen

i think im gonna give it a go ive got torqe rench and all that and a 30mm socket just one question how do you drain the gearbox oil ?

^ Undo the bolt on the bottom or pull a driveshaft out. There's 2 litres in there so make sure you have a big enough container. Also, it's worth taking the car for a run first to warm the gearbox oil up as the old stuff will flow out better.
