Engine rebuild - VTR

    How much would it cost and what involved.

    Basically the VTR I have got is good, drives and goes well but its very noisy, doesnt over heat but has started pinking.

    I was wondering if a strip down and rebuild would be worth it. Or just get a second hand engine.

    I would like to use the car on track next year so will be driven hard.

    Might be a lot cheaper to get a good 2nd hand engine to be honest before we start talking about a rebuild.

    Did you never find the problem causing the pinking then?

    Cost wise for engine rebuild depends on if you're going to do it on your own or pay labour and parts charge for a specialist to do it.

    Parts considered in engine rebuild would be big end bearings, little end bearing, piston rings, con rods and pistons acid cleaned, cylinder honed, crankshaft balanced, new oil pump set up, every gasket replaced, new head bolts, valve stem oil seals, valves re cut/ground, new waterpump, thermostat, new valve springs + collets, cambelt and tensioner kit...probably a few more parts/seals to be considered too.

    Not yet mate, I still need to change the knock sensor. (read next reply)

    I know,... its a lot of work :/

    Basically a good friend works at Citroen, one of the top mechanics. He will be doing a cambelt kit/water pump change for me, gonna get him to look at the pinking. It would be him I got to either change engine or rebuild. His prices are very good.

    I know a second hand engine would be the easier option but seeing as I would like to turn it into a track car I was considering a rebuild.

    Depends what you want out of your "track car" if you want to stay 8v then by all means rebuild the engine. 8v engines are so cheap I would buy a low mileage example same year as your own and build that up. If your going to be rebuilding you can also look at better parts such as pistons, heads, flywheels ect to suit your needs/wants. But as said it all depends on budget and what you want from the car in the long run.

    100% staying 8v. Purely fun on the track but with reliability, mines on 100k now and is very noisy so another engine or rebuild is a must.

    OK - lets put it another way:

    If an 8v engine was to be rebuilt for track use with better parts what cost would I be looking at. Are we talking say £1000 + ? Or low hundreds

    Just buy a healthy low mileaged VTR engine...that's the best bet. Clean it up, flush and change all fluids and filters and have fun on track
