Yes - otherwise you're putting 1 ton + of force on parts of the car not designed for it (lateral force on the towing eye for example).
Towing with a bar is simple. Keep it slow, anticipate braking and do EVERYTHING gently - turning, braking, pulling away. Work as a team and it's straightforward.
Towing with a rope is harder for both parties - the driver of the tow vehicle has to be much more careful, and the tow-ee needs to do everything 200% more careful and slowly than with a bar. Also need to keep tension on the rope at all times. If it goes slack at all, when tension is reapplied it can snap easily.
Use a bar. If you can't use that, get it on a trailer.
