I have put a newman ph3 in my vtr early silvertop 90hp.
First of all i tryed the cheapass way, without removing the head. I will not recoment this, you put alot of strain on axle that hold the lifters, and risk to possible damage the lifters and the axle. Alot faster to do this the right way and just pull of the head.
When mounted my cam i had already done the followering mods:
Raceland 4-2-1
Hoffman sports catalytic convertor
Magnex cat back system
Intake from 1,3 rally engine
BMC CDA air filter
First off i ran it at standard timing, this gave noticable gain. Starting cold was still ok, and idling was nice.
Then i timed it up my self using dialgauge, this boosted the gain some more. Cold starting got worse, the first minut its pretty jerky and the steppermotor has hard time adjusting the idle. If drive along and just drop the clutch and throttle it will stall. But if you drive it slow and let of the throttle easy and then brakes, and wait too drop clutch until it almost on idle it wont stall.
When it gets hot it runs fine and idle is a little lumpy but not that bad.
I curently drive it like this and has done for the last 4 months. I did exhaust analysis i it runs lean on idle but straighten out ind midtrange when the o2 sensor kicks in.
My next step is to try and boost the fuelpressure a little to get the mixture better.
The best thing would defently be to get the box remappet, and im sure i would get a noticable gain if i get i mappet now. But i dont want use the money for it right now.
I have done all the work myself. Has it been worth it? Yes i think so but if you look at the price and if you have to pay to get work done, you are defently better of putting in a vts engine.
Hope this helps you out....
