Manifold Wrapping

  1. #1
Ive been told by a few people to wrap my manifold. And then ive been told today that if i do wrap my manifold, my engine will be running alot hotter than usual and cause my fan to be on alot more.

    Wrap or don't wrap?

and how far? just the manifold or further?

if you wrap ypur manifold your engine will run hotter as its holding the heat in, how ever from what i have read you will gain a few bhp from doign this, only down side is because your manifold is holding the heat the engine is hotter and a few people out of loads i have read have it had there head crack as a result, duno how true this is just read it somewhere

You just wrap the manifold and it should help bring the temp down i know my manifold kicks off some right heat.

Ebay is one of the cheapest places to get it from I keep meaning to do mine but its looks to good to cover up and i cant be arsed to take it off either.

Just read your post Steve and I've also heard about manifolds cracking apparently there is some kind of paint you can get that does the same job as the wrap but I dont know much about it.

i have also heared about the paint but its quite expensive if i remember

Manifolds can crack but I wouldn't think a head would unless it was REALY hot..... the heat wrap just stop heat escaping into the engine bay as metal is an excellent conductor of heat, it means the metal will get hotter, the engine should actually be cooler due to the lack of heat in the bay and near the radiator, the manifolds life will be shortened though especially on mild steel where water will absorb into the wrap and more than likely corrode the welds

Well mines a S/S manifold, so i might give it a go. But i won't be taking it off to wrap it, as it was a right chew to get the f**ker on!!

heat wrap is also there to hellp expell exhaust gasses.

he keeps the heat in the gases so helps them travel faster, hot air moves faster than cold.

imo i wouldn't spray the wrap i done that on my old manifold and the wrap went dry and cracked. i have sprayed the wrap on my current manifold and it looks better and has lasted longer.

the intake temps will be lower but the engine running temps will be ever so slightly higher

thanks for all your help etc. I've ordered some off ebay this afernoon

it wont change. it keeps the heat in the gasses.
my temps never go above 1/2.

yer it deffinatly helps. my yemperature seems to go up to near red but only cause i need to wire up a manual radialor switch. for some reason my vts radiator isnt working after the conversion! dont know why. it just doesnt kick in!

i heard that wrap can acually help to rot the manifold if its mild steal...!?

I've wraped abou three 4-2-1 manifolds in my car ownin history, and I've heard all the horror stories as well, but I've never had anything like welds cracking or heads cracking (Im typing this one handed with other touchin wood).

Maybe if the wrap was completly open to the eliments and getting wet all the time then sitting damp I could understand but I reckon for kind of road use most of us do wrappin a manifold should be fine.

Besides, there is always someone who will tell you "ooooo won't do that if I was you, my brothers sisters boyfriends dads sons mate knew a bloke that did that and . . . Blar Blar Blar"

the wrap wouldnt get wet anyway! not unless you squirt it with water before you go bed at night! the wrapping still gets bloody hot but not half as hot as the manifold does. as soon as any water touched the heat wrap it sizzles and runs off and it would evaporate straight the way if it wasnt as hot!
  15. #15
even if it did get wet it would dry itself out within minutes with the heat of the engine.

spot on mate. my point exactly. fot a manifold?. . . bollox i say!

heat wrap is designed to hold the heat in the manifold, this allows the gas to flow better thro the zorst there for helping with performance.
it does reduces temp a tad in the engine bay, but not drastically. you defo carnt touch the manifold, even when its wrapped.

as for the mild steel comment, it will make the mild steel rot, if not used on a regular basis. but once hot, it burns off the moisture.
but stainless steel manifolds are prone to cracking as they are brittle. so both manifolds have their positive and negative points.

is wrapping a manifold a good mod?
i would say so, ive done mine

What should i use to wrap manifold? like cable ties but stainless steel? or what?

    Cheers

you get special wrap demon tweeks sell it

    metal ties you will need

you might get these with the wrap itself

Cheers lads. Would CV Boot clips work?

    possibly
