VTR power restrictions?

  1. #1
recently bought an 02 VTR, went to overtake on motorway other day and car decided to say no, had to overtake in 5th -.-

when car reaches about 4k revs it feels like it wants to cut out or die, iits like running out of petrol feeling when u put the foot down, or go up a steep hill at 20mph and putting it into 5th ha. anyho the car restricts to about 75-80 in 5th gear.

at first i fought it was the kn air filter, so i put the stock back in, does the same.

could it possible be a blocked cat? no codes come up on a fault reader, reset the ecu drove around and tested again, no codes.

I was going to say cat

Oh maybe it has a blocked fuel filter.

i've got a 03 1.4 furio sat on my drive. could i drop the cat straight in from that one? all 8v are same right?

strange, does it actually rev past 4k in other gears?

could try a different coil pack.

Change fuel filter / make sure the fuel pipe running down the passenger side isn't being crushed by the seat etc..

That's cheapest option to try first.. If that doesn't sort it, Try a different cat

The engine comes alive after 4k.. and pulls easily to the limiter so something clearly wrong.

completely different car but my missus's fiesta did this on the drive home from buying it. I knew that dead or dying MAF (mass air flow) sensors could cause alsorts of weird and wonderful symptoms so disconnected it and it ran perfect.

Having said that I'm sure I've read that saxo's have a MAP (manifold absolute pressure) sensor instead of a MAF.. Just another suggestion in the pot if it turns out not to be the Cat or fuel filter.

    check the throttle cable.

injectors nearing the end of there lives? use a diagnostics machine to do a fuel quantity comparison test

I think it's blocked exhaust. Car just broke down on motorway commingfrom Portsmouth the exhaust has popped of from the engine manifold just below the cat jut waiting for aa ha absolutely pissing it down soo something that way was restricting it for it shear off just before the bolts

It doesn't let me hit limiter first gear lets me to about 6k 2nd between 4-5 rest about 3.5 to 4

its blown the cat off? omfg must have been fucked!

Rip the exhaust off, shove it in the back.. and drive home pretending to be a rally driver.

as some1 above said check the maf - i had exactly the same problem in my corsa a few years, was afta messing around with the air filter and air feeds so it could be your issue 2 4k in 5th in my vtr is nearly 90mph tho so obv the acceleration will be quite sluggish at that speed as the power of the engine is beginning to be overcome by the air resistance

i would say its the original cat so 10 years and x amount of miles old, collapsed inside the casing thus causing a restriction when you exceed 4k under that i guess you wouldnt notice so much, especially as your trying to pull in 5th

im getting it wielded tommoro, im going to see if that makes any difference, at the moment ive got a wire case wrapped around the joint, courtasy of the AA as he cba to toe me 40miles home. quite funny when i change gear the 2 pipes open up you get a massive pop. haha/

suppose if this is not the problem, gives me a reason to get a de cat haha

    agreed

right. its still not working. had new cat fitted. changed coil pack over. put standard air filter back on, did a diag. no errors. Reset ECU.

    Still not working...

Took the backbox off. drove a mile to see if it could clear any thing or breathe. still the same.

im stuck for ideas... last route if its possible the ECU. could i plug my 2003 furio ECU into the VTR both 3plug.

Sounds like its got a dodgey map sensor or the fuel pump is on its way out toe something

just change the map sensor over.. still nothing. i belive the pump is fine..

i just want to be able to over take lol. looks stupid when at max speed is 85 mph!! which is in 5th gear and takes about an hour to get too going downhill lol

i might change the spark plugs if i can find my bendy ratchett but it dont seem to be mis firing or running on 2 or 3. when i get to the 4-5k revs it just feels like the manifold from the front wants to blow.

I find it hard to believe itd be spark plugs or ecu as stated try the map sensor if youv swapped coil pack what does it rev like when your sat still?

ive changed the map sensor. it sits between 800-1200

Changed the spark plugs today. one spark was snapped. for some reason there was too much oil, drained it and re filled. not as sluggish but still restricting.

anyone else have any ideas? gets to about 4-5k revs and the power just dies down, i have to change gear or take foot off and put foot on slowly to gain a bit more accelartaion

Sorry on iPhone can't edit posts. Also. Will a mk2 furio parts I.e crankshaft sensor injectors and fuel pump for my mk2 saxo vtr the furio is 2003 vtr 2002
