Coming off the round about in second being a tad naughty spat itself out of second then wouldn't go back into gear any gear everything still feels ok on clutch and gear stick yet when you put it into where a gear should be then nothing so is this a new gearbox or could it be something else??
vts gearbox problem

#2could be clutch disengagement or whatever its called. i had this problem on my megane coupé gear linkgages and clutch engangement
-
#3i have just fixed a furio with te same problem i have no idea how it does it but all you need is a new clutch and gearbox oil should set you back 90-100 from apd just the clutch has blown up it will probley be in like ten pieces and see if you can get a clutch with te allighnment tool as you will need it when changing the clutch
-
#4alternatively it could just be a gear linkage has popped off. Is the lever sloppy? Can you engage gears when the engine is off?
-
#5Na there's nothing there gear stick feels normal ish doesn't matter weather I put clutch in or not I can move stick into gear but nothing happens its like there's no bite doesn't select a gear at all
-
#6Definitely sounds like a shot clutch to me. Had the same thing happen a while ago on our 205 before we got the saxo. If you want to be 100% sure whip the gearbox off and see what the clutch is like. Most likely the clutch plate will have been stripped off on one side.

#7Www.carparts4less.co.uk / .com is the same as eurocarparts (same layout/design/style, just different colours/name) but costs slightly less. LUK clutch on eurocarparts is £90, but on carparts4less it's £76... And at the minute if you put the promo code 'clutch10' in the promo code box at checkout you get an extra 10% off so ends up being £70. The clutch10 page is on the front page of their site so double check the promo code

#8Cheers for the replies I thought it may have been the clutch as sometimes it would crunch going down gears while I was still rolling even though clutch was fully in I guess this means I get to put the 1.1 box on although i hate working on cars in the winter lol
Found clutch kit on ebay brand new delivered for 40 quid and a 3 year 20k mileage warrenty thatl do won't it? -
#9If its transmech clutch kit then steer clear, I nearly bought one from carparts4less but ran a search on here first.. Tonnes of posts from people saying the clutch lasted 50 miles etc.
-
#10It says it comes with a 33 year warranty or 20k miles so if it breaks in 50 ill have fun ripping them a new one? Are we pretty certain its the clutch and not box though I though a clutch would slip or have I gone a step further and its exploded? Because I can't select any gear and I thought when clutches go you can put em in gear and start them in gear but mine won't it doesn't select a gear at all no grinding nothing???
-
#11What I'd do is get the car up on stands, get underneath and have a look what is going on. You might find the problem just by doing that. Try selecting a gear just using the selector mechanism on the back of the box, then jump in the car and start it up with the clutch down and see what happens - whether a wheel spins round or anything when you ease the clutch up.
-
#12If the clutch has totally gone then if you put it in gear and start it nothing will happen. The clutch carries the drive from the engine to the gearbox. Without a clutch there is nothing to transmit the power from the engine to the box so the car won't go anywhere. You should also be able to select all the gears with the engine running and without depressing the clutch pedal if the clutch is totally shot.Quote:It says it comes with a 33 year warranty or 20k miles so if it breaks in 50 ill have fun ripping them a new one? #13Thats true, they do have that warrenty, but its up to you if you want to be out for a drive and lose all your gears then have to take the car off the road for a day and fit a new clutch from then which will then last another day or pay a garage £100 every 2 days to fit a new one as they wont refund you labour charges.Quote:It says it comes with a 33 year warranty or 20k miles so if it breaks in 50 ill have fun ripping them a new one? I would rather spend £60 more and get a decent clutch that will last 60k miles than a £40 which needs to be replaced every other day having the car off the road for a day at a time and pay £110 labour every other day.
Also why fit the 1,1 box over the VTS box? -
#14Yea I can start the car and put it in gear without pressing clutch and nothing happens sounds about right does anyone know if there's anything I need to be aware of when swapping a 1.1 box onto a vts? Anything I need to change or is it just a straight swap like for like?
I see your point and 1.1 boxes have better acceleration ratios apparently? That's what I've read anyway with a final drive of 140 or so according to this site so I thought why not? -
#15Just need to be aware of a weaker diff and not as good in gear performance.Quote:Yea I can start the car and put it in gear without pressing clutch and nothing happens sounds about right does anyone know if there's anything I need to be aware of when swapping a 1.1 box onto a vts? I would stick to the VTS gearbox mate. Stronger diff, even though the 1,1 diff will be fine and better in gear performance. Just because ratios which show better acceleration doesnt mean its a better box for accelarating.Quote:I see your point and 1.1 boxes have better acceleration ratios apparently? Why do you want to go 140mph? lol A VTR wont reach 140mph and also a 1.1 box reduces the top speed. -
#16A vtr? Its a vts so it does 140 plus anyway so I was just referring to the fact I don't lose much top end by switching to the 1.1 box I understand what your saying I've just talked to friends plus there is a guide on here somewhere that had the ratios and acceleration stats for different boxes on the different saxo models cammed and non cammed so I figured it could be a quik power boost especially since I'm doing the clutch anyway you know what I mean youv made me undecided now though lol
-
#17Pretty sure the 1.1 gear ratios are similar to vts, vts is better however.
Buy a cheap clutch with warranty yeah but i will only last a few miles then replace it again takes to long just buy a valeo. -
#18There close but I'm positive the 1.1 box had better acceleration it was a stickied chart on the transmission section but if its not better ill not bother?
-
#19Sorry just looked at the second post n saw the car was a VTR thought it was you.Quote:A vtr? But yeh stick to the VTS box.
1.1 boxes are only good when you are on a tight budget or theres no VTS boxes available as a replacement.1 user thanked this post: -
#20Ah well ill leave the 1.1 box then save the money and just buy a decent clutch instead
-
#21The 1.1 box definitely has better ratios than the VTS box for acceleration. I can't vouch for the strength of the diff or gears themselves though. Ratio information:
1587 cc (vts)
1st===3.417:1
2nd===1.950:1
3rd===1.360:1
4th===1.050:1
5th===0.850:1
rev===2.500:1
final drive===3.938:1
954 cc and 1124 cc
1st===3.417:1
2nd===1.180:1
3rd===1.276:1
4th===1.026:1
5th===0.767:1
rev===2.500:1
final drive===4.286:1
Obviously you'd lose top end speed and fuel economy by using the 1.1 box as well. If it was me I'd probably just stick with the vts box. -
#22Stick with the VTS box - s1 rallye is a bit low for road use imo, s2 rallye is close to the VTS, 1.4 xsi is a nice compromise and its got the tougher diff. Finding any of those boxes is the hard bit mind you
